With the election recently behind us, politics have been a hot topic lately. And, as I listened to the soundtrack of Hamilton, I found more similarities to modern politics than I ever would have thought!
1. "I wanna be in the room where it happens."
Because nothing about politics is completely transparent, and sometimes, I wish I could be there with politicians when they're making decisions.
2. "Talk less, smile more."
With all of the posts on social media of people shaming each others' parties, it's no wonder the country is split in half. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is keep your opinions to yourself.
3. "If you stand for nothing [Burr], what do you fall for?"
On the other hand, some people seem to stand behind candidates for no reason at all or purely based on social influence. No matter which way you lean, it's important to know about that party's policies and beliefs.
4. "Why do you assume you're the smartest in the room?"
When it comes to politics, people can be STUBBORN. Sometimes, no matter how rational the argument is, people will choose to ignore it.
5. "My power of speech, unimpeachable"
While some people take this to the next degree, one of the most wonderful things about this country is the ability to express opinions freely.
6. "Only 19, but my mind is older"
Personally, I can relate to this one as I see more young people getting involved and expressing their opinions. Education about politics doesn't have an age limit!
7. "There will be a revolution in this century."
With all of the infighting in our country, we are in the midst of a huge political revolution.
8. "Look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now."
And, during this revolution, we will all get to see what happens! We truly are seeing one of the most influential times in politics occurring right before our eyes.
9. "Are we a nation of states, what's the state of our nation?"
Lin drops this line early on in the musical, referring to how divided the country was with regards to Britain. However, we seem to be facing a similar divide between political parties today as we did back when our country was founded.
10. "You want a revolution, I want a revelation."
So many people want to fight, but sometimes it is just important that the truth be revealed so people can make their own decisions.
11. "I am the one thing in life I can control."
No matter how much commotion goes on, I know that I will always be able to control the things thatt I say and the actions that I take towards what I believe is just.
12. "You will never agree with me, but believe me, these men don't speak for me"
Often politicians will not agree with everything the party preaches. Just because someone belongs to a party, it doesn't mean that they believe everything everyone in the party says!
13. "My name's been through a lot, I can take it."
Nowadays, candidates go through so much before they can even be elected. Just as George Washington's was, everyone in politics has had their name run through the mud.
14. "And you are paranoid in every paragraph, how they perceive you."
With the scrutiny that these politicians face, it is imperative that they think about how their words will be perceived by the public.
15. "If you join us right now, together, we could turn the tide."
There's power in numbers, and the only way to ignite change is by getting others to join you!
16. "The world will never be the same."
After this political revolution is over, the world truly will be changed.
17. "Frankly it's a little disquieting, you would let your ideals blind you to reality."
People often only see their own beliefs, not thinking about the current state of our nation and what would benefit it.
18. "But they don't have a plan, they just hate mine."
This often seems to be the case in politics. Instead of trying to counter something, people just hate on what is already in place!
19. "We studied, and we fought, and we killed, for the notion of a nation we now get to build."
Even though it was years ago, people often forget how much work it took to build this country from the ground up. The Founding Fathers didn't give us this wonderful nation for us to abuse it!
20. "And so the American experiment begins..."
With the new dynamic of our nation, this is definitely a nationwide experiment of the political parties. If this is the experiment, I'm glad that I get to be a part of it!
