When the Hamilton soundtrack was first released, I thought that there was no possible way that it could ever get any better. From the actual lyrics of the songs to the amazing vocalists singing on the tracks, I believed that nothing could ever top the original soundtrack, but boy was I wrong. With the recent release of The Hamilton Mixtape, my whole world has turned upside down and I realized that this is all I have ever needed in my life.
The Hamilton Mixtape, rewritten and produced by the one and only Lin Manuel Miranda, has become quite an instant hit with the masses much like the original soundtrack mere hours after it was released online. With an abundant group of new artists performing their own takes on the original Hamilton compositions, this album has gone to stellar lengths to incorporate modern popular culture and Musical Theatre together once again. With amazing feature artists such as Sia, Andra Day, Busta Rhymes, Usher, Jimmy Fallon, Alicia Keys, and even Kelly Clarkson, this album has surely surpassed the original in regards to its modernism and unique tone.
While I have only listened to the album every day since it has been released, there is no possible way to pick a favorite song. Much like the original soundtrack, each song continuously gets better and better from the next, and each has its own unique sound and style that varies immensely from the original product. To name a top few songs though, I would have to go with:
- “Burn” –Andra Day
- “Wait For It” –Usher
- “Satisfied” –Sia, Miguel, and Queen Latifah
- “Dear Theodosia Reprise” –Chance The Rapper and Francis & The Lights
- “History Has Its Eyes On You” –John Legend
While these are only a few of the many gems on The Hamilton Mixtape, each song is equally, if not better, than the next and I highly recommend that everyone listen to it immediately, especially if you’re an avid fan of Hamilton: The Musical like I am.
