Hamilton For Bookworms

My name is Alexander Hamilton, and there's a million books I haven't read. Just you wait, just you wait.

Hamilton, the musical following the life of Alexander Hamilton, has completely dominated Broadway since it’s opening at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in August 2015. Since then, the show and its creator, Lin Manuel-Miranda, have stolen the hearts of many fangirls and fanboys (mine included). For those of us who unfortunately cannot buy Hamilton’s extremely limited and expensive tickets, no worries! In honor of Hamilton's Chicago opening, we can get into the show's spirit through books related to songs in the show! This post is essentially geared toward us Hamilton-loving bookworms, but everyone can find some fun, including Peggy! Maureen Graham created the tag on her YouTube channel, maureenkeavy, in 2015.

The Room Where it Happens: A book world you put yourself in.

This probably seems like the most typical bookworm answer, but obviously I would choose the world of Harry Potter! Who wouldn’t want to drink butterbeer and play Quidditch?

The Schuyler Sisters: Underrated female character.

I find that Josie from Erin McCahan’s “Love and Other Foreign Words” is one the most underrated female characters in YA literature. The book follows Josie, a sixteen-year old genius who has trouble figuring out love and relationships. Josie is such a witty character, and her sarcasm and quick remarks absolutely make the novel.

My Shot:A character that goes after what they want and doesn't let anything stop them.

While she may act a bit stubborn at times, Celaena Sardothein from Sarah J. Maas’s“Throne of Glass” is an amazing female character. The YA fantasy series follows Celaena’s release from a year of hard labor in the Endovier's salt mines to her fighting to be the King of Adarlan’s lead assassin. With a quick wit and a ton of sass, Celaena fights for what she believes in and makes her one of the top heroines in today’s young adult literature.

You'll Be Back: Sassiest villain.

The lead villain in Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman’s “Illuminae” may not appear as the world’s sassiest antagonist at first, but you’ll learn soon enough that a computer program can be the source of your worst nightmares! “Illuminae” is set in the year 2575 as the novel’s protagonists Ezra and Kady are forced to leave their planet as war rains upon them. After escaping, they think that the worst of their problems are over, but that’s before they meet AI, the computer-programming system on Kady’s fleet. AI is unwilling to help Kady and Ezra as problems soon begin on their respective spaceships, and it is often sarcastic and sassy in its replies. While it’s quite entertaining, AI becomes quite scary as Ezra and Kady’s lives are put on the line.

Non-Stop: A series you marathoned.

Last January, I marathoned Marie Lu’s "Legend" trilogy. For those still having serious The Hunger Games hangovers, Legend takes place in a dystopian United States, where the country is spilt into two sections, the Colonies and the Republic. We follow the lives of June, the Republic’s military sweetheart, and Day, the Republic’s rebel. All three books are filled with such action and suspense that will keep you turning the pages until the very end.

Satisfied: Favorite book with multiple POVs.

Marissa Meyer’s “The Lunar Chronicles” is the fairy-tale and science fiction crossover you never realized you wanted until you dive into its first novel. The series follows Cinder, a half cyborg, and her crew’s journey in defeating the evil Lunar Queen Levana. These books have become one of my favorite series of all time, and Meyer is releasing two graphic novels in 2017 based on the series!!!

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: A book/series you feel like will be remembered throughout history.

Another obvious bookworm answer, but Harry Potter will not only forever live on in my heart, but in the hearts of many people around the world. Over 500 million copies of the series have been sold worldwide, and people will always need to be reminded to not let the muggles get them down.

NOW GO READ LIKE YOU’RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
