Warning: this article contains spoilers from the production of Hamilton
12. James and Maria Reynolds
This is obviously a no brainer, nobody in the audience during this show has a soft spot for these two. Maria knows that Hamilton is married and still tries (and succeeds) to seduce him anyways. We get it that her husband, James, is obviously terrible the way she describes him to Hamilton. He does the good thing and gives her some money to help her out and takes her home; where he then ends up sleeping with her. As if that wasn’t bad enough, James then forces Hamilton to give him money to keep the secret. First of all, if James Reynolds had any class or morals at all he wouldn’t have been a wife beater to begin with. He also would have told Eliza what’s going on because that’s not fair to her by any means. Without the affair Hamilton would have thrived a lot more and probably would have became the next president. James and Maria Reynolds were a huge obstacle in Hamilton’s life and did nothing to help him succeed. If I could rate them lower than the last I would.
11. Madison
I found Madison’s character to be overall boring. He just kind of carries around a handkerchief and follows Jefferson around, basically agreeing with everything he says in the very few lines that he has. I really didn’t feel any connection or have any real established opinion on this character. He’s not featured in really any songs, overall I just really didn’t care for him.
10. Jefferson
Ask anyone about the founding fathers and Jefferson’s name is likely to come up. He’s a very well known president and American icon. I myself am not a fan of of Jefferson after seeing this production and I can’t assume I’m the only one. Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence saying that all men are created equal. Yet somehow got himself out of fighting in the Revolutionary War by going across seas. To me, that just looks extremely lazy and selfish that he couldn’t fight for his own country. He really had to be in London the entire duration of the war? Also with Hamilton being the main character, he’s kinda a butt to him up until the time he needs Hamilton on his side to win the election. I didn’t find anything about him appealing and thought he was a loser.
9. Peggy
I am really upset that Peggy was only featured during this play once. Angelica and Eliza are in almost every song and they only mention Peggy during "Schuyler Sisters" and after that you only see her on stage during the wedding. I’m even more upset that they don’t bring up that Peggy died. She is just never mentioned again. Unless you do your research you don’t know that she ends up dying. In "Take a Break" they do a moment of silence for her when Angelica and Eliza say each other's names and you would expect “and Peggy” to come next and it doesn’t. It leaves you guessing whatever happened to her.
8. King George
Listening to the soundtrack I mostly skipped over all of King George’s songs because I thought they were boring. Nobody really likes him because obviously he’s against the war and wants to keep America as English territory. After seeing the production my opinion of King George changes completely. On stage he plays this sarcastic funny guy who sings and dances to himself. The complete annoyance he has with America is so relatable to everyday annoyances we have, with the eye rolls and sighs you can’t help but laugh. Not going to lie, one of my new favorite pick up lines is King George’s line “No don’t change the subject, cause you’re my favorite subject,” in his song "You’ll be back."
7. Aaron Burr
Aaron Burr is a guy you love in the beginning and eventually start to grow to hate. With lines like “talk less, smile more” you see a real friendship between him and Hamilton. The events start to turn when Burr switches parties just to take Hamilton’s father-in-law's seat. (Spoiler) After that point, tension starts to grow between the two until eventually Burr shoots Hamilton. This hurts a lot because they were friends! Both men were too petty to put political differences aside and just be friends still! How bad was the tension where Burr seriously needed to shoot him. Like that’s so unnecessary. At the end of the song where Burr realizes things went too far he says, “I should have known the world was wide enough for Hamilton and me.” I give him credit for acknowledging it but he acknowledged it way too late.
6. George Washington
I really liked Washington's character in this production. We get to see how Washington takes Hamilton under his wing almost and supports him. Washington acts like a friend and family figure to Hamilton while still trying to be his boss at the same time. Washington makes Hamilton his right-hand man, and he assists George through the Revolutionary War. I really like the relationship that was portrayed between these two characters, you could feel the chemistry when they began building a friendship/partnership in act one.
5. Hamilton
Many people will probably be shocked and wonder why Hamilton himself is in the middle of this list. This description will contain a lot of spoilers, so be warned. First of all, in the first act Hamilton is a pretty good guy. We get to learn about his start here and his past life before he came to America. He finds his wife and makes a really good set of friends; basically everyone is rooting for him. Then, in the second act, it's almost like a flip switches in his brain. He starts rising up in the government, finishes college and becomes a lawyer, he never stops working. He ends up having an affair while his wife and kids are upstate, he publishes the blackmail letter he got about the affair to clear his name and hurts his wife. He tells his son to go to a duel that ends up killing him. In the second act he just isn't a very likeable person. Especially since we saw how awesome he was in act one and how much he had going for him. During act two no matter what he did he was never satisfied.
4. Phillip Hamilton
Phillip, the first-born of Alexander and Eliza, is such a cute kid and character. We learn about Eliza's pregnancy in act one but don't really meet Phillip until act two when he is nine. While he's still a child we can see him trying for his father's attention. When he gets older he sees someone bad-talking his father and goes to his father for advice. Alexander tells him how to duel and how to do it with honor. With his best intentions at heart he lets his son go to duel, but like I said earlier, he doesn't return. We only see Phillip for a short time but I feel for him because he would have done anything for his father, even though growing up all Alexander did was work constantly.
3. John Laurens
Laurens does not get enough credit for how awesome he is. Out of all of the guys he is easily my favorite. He's drunk pretty much the entire first act which is much appreciated. He stays with Hamilton for the majority of the war and they work together writing letters and trying to make a difference. Overall I felt like Laurens was pretty cool and I had a good amount of respect for him. In the song "Stay Alive," Laurens has a line where he says, "Alexander, you're the closest friend I've got." This is where I really start to feel for him. Laurens goes to a duel because Hamilton can't and does it in his honor. His friend was willing to physically die for him. He didn't end up dying in this duel, but after the war Laurens does end up dying, and that's the first time I almost cried while watching this production.
2. Angelica
The first time I listened to the soundtrack of this play I immediately grew to like Angelica. One of the most selfless characters, she didn't tell her sister that she loved the boy her she was to marry. She never did anything to act on those feelings that might have hurt her sister. During the whole production she puts Eliza before herself in every situation and I definitely respect that. She doesn't care that she will never be satisfied because all that matters is that Eliza is happy.
1. Eliza Hamilton
Listening to Act 1, I probably would have put Angelica before Eliza because of her selflessness. After listening to Act 2, my heart physically hurts for Eliza. All Alexander does is work, Eliza constantly tells him that they don't need money or a legacy, that they just need to be together. He continues to work anyways. On a family vacation Alexander refuses to attend, he has an affair with Maria Reynolds and keeps this from Eliza. She finds out and is so hurt and heartbroken. Then, Hamilton unintentionally sends their first born to his death. Even after he does all of this, Eliza ends up being forgiving. She's willing to forget about the adultery and the loss of her son to start over with her husband. I could never do this. I would have kicked him to the curb right after the affair. I have so much respect for Eliza, she's definitely a more forgiving and understanding person than I am.
