“Every friend that I know has a story like mine.”

Women everywhere are beginning to stand up for themselves in a fierce and passionate manner. Together, women are making a stance against sexual assault and the abuse of woman's rights. On January 20th, Halsey took a break from music to speak on sexual assault at the 2018 Women's March in New York City.

Halsey introduced her speech by stating, "I don't really know how to do a speech unless it rhymes, so I'm gonna do a little poem for you guys." During this poem named "A Story Like Mine," Halsey passionately and emotionally spoke on real-life experiences that she and those around her have experienced. When listening to her speech, women everywhere related to her message as they have experienced the same discomfort in their lives.

In her speech, Halsey covered topics of sexual assault as a child, mentally and physically abusive relationships, rape, miscarriages, and how being in the public eye does not protect you. She also reminded her audience that there are women out there who do not have a voice in other countries including child brides.

Halsey even went on to discuss political figures such as Trump and men in the media with sexual assault accusations. The singer stated, "And that’s why we’re here, and that’s why we rally. It’s Olympians and a medical resident and not one f---ng word from the man who is President."

The singer later addressed what her message to President Trump would be in a post-speech interview with TMZ. The response is at second 45.

Hundreds of women acknowledged the importance of Halsey's speech. As she is a woman in the public eye, her speech means so much to young women learning of these misfortunes and women who have experienced different forms of assault and inequality.

Other women of great platforms have been following Halsey's lead and taking a stance against sexual assault.

Natalie Portman

The actress spoke at this year's Women's March in Los Angeles. Portman spoke on the struggles of being a sexualized child star and dealing with sexual references as she became a young adult in the industry.

Jimmy Kimmel

At 3:20, Jimmy Kimmel discusses the President's reaction to the Women's March. The Women's March took place on the anniversary of Trump's inauguration.

156 Victims

Former Team USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar is being sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for his years of sexual abuse. 156 victims spoke out on the mater and explained what Nassar did to them.

Emma Watson

I will end my video clips with a great speech from Emma Watson to the United Nations. Not only is the speech powerful, I believe it shows hope for our future.

I am proud to say I have met such an empowering woman. At the age of 23, the young singer is already making such a great impact. Halsey empowered women everywhere and "A Story Like Mine" shows you are never too young or old to start talking about what you believe in or what has affected you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
