When one thinks about female artists, one might think of a few popular ones such as Selena Gomez, Lana Del Rey, or maybe even Nicki Minaj. Each popular pop artist out there has their own unique sound and look. But there is a new girl on the charts and she is stealing the show.
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, more commonly known as Halsey, is slowly taking over the female artist spotlight. At only 20 years old, Halsey has a brand new album, which is currently the number one alternative album, number two billboard top 200 debut, and number three new artist debut of 2015. As I am struggling to keep up with laundry, there is this amazing 20-year-old shattering stereotypes and absolutely killing the charts. She also is going on tour starting Sept. 30, and every single show is sold out, yet so many people do not know about her amazing music and badass personality.
As stated in her artist bio on her website, iamhalsey.com, "I am Halsey. I will never be anything but honest. I write songs about sex and being sad." Okay, let me just state that her music is so much more than this. Her music what you would listen to when you are so in love and don't know the words to express how you feel. Her music is for the people who want to change others, and the people who don't fit a certain type of stereotype. The different people. Her music is so important to listen to while you are college-aged. She discusses and nails the many taboo topics that are so relevant in college. With that being said, I give you my personal top three favorite Halsey songs for college-aged girls to listen to.
1. Is there somewhere
"White sheets, bright lights, crooked teeth, and the night life. You told me this is right where it begins."
When I hear this song, I think about how hard it is to have your first love leave, how hard it was to have to get rid of something that you once cared so much about. She sings, "I'm sorry, but I fell in love tonight. I didn't mean to fall in love tonight. You're lookin' like you fell in love tonight. Can we pretend that we're in love?" That line alone is so relatable for any girl who has been in love, or who has even thought she has been in love with someone. It's the perfect song to jam to if you're feeling a little down.
2. Ghost
"I like the sad eyes, bad guys, mouth full of white lies. Kiss me in the corridor, but quick to tell me goodbye."
This song is her biggest hit. It has catchy lyrics and a great tune that will be stuck in your head forever. This song is about a boy that has left her, but has not yet left her soul. It is good, but I love this song more for the beat and the little sparkle sounds in the background. It's catchy, and your friends will love you for getting them hooked on this song as well.
3. Hurricane
"I'm a wanderess, I'm a one night stand. Don't belong to no city, don't belong to no man."
This is my absolute favorite song by her. This song, according to her Spotify commentary, is about how this boy warned her to stay away because he had a history of getting with girls and then leaving. She flips on this boy and she becomes the bad guy. She becomes the one night stand; she becomes the hurricane in his life. This is genius! Halsey has a way of making a taboo subject into a great song that so many people can relate to. No girl wants to be the one who gets played, so she became the player. It is brilliant, and this song alone made me go from being a listener to a fan.
As you listen to the album, Badlands, listen to the lyrics of each song. Think about them and how this girl is only 20 years old; she would just be a sophomore in college. Not only do her songs make great Instagram captions, but they also serve as advice to the ones in love, comfort to the brokenhearted, and relatable words for any young adult. Spread her name like wildfire, listen to what she has to say, and enjoy.
