2016's hottest breakout star—Halsey teases sophomore album "hopeless fountain kingdom" with a new song accompanied by a music video concept. Within the past year she has released her first album, toured the world again, and have had hit singles with Justin Bieber and The Chainsmokers.
Now or Never is Halsey's new single described by Halsey herself to be a vibe of a song that was put together very quickly. Just as her debut album Badlands had a strong story line, hopeless fountain kingdom has a larger love story line, giving the new single a double entendre.
Throughout the past few weeks, the singer has been releasing photos through her social media accounts teasing the album. The photos include phrases about a kingdom, new merchandise and bees, but mostly tarot cards. Using this photo-set to announce the album release date, the first tarot card was also used to announce the new song. The date corresponds with the roman numerals, so we should expect to hear hopeless fountain kingdom on June 2nd, 2017.
Halsey used a variation of the first tarot card to also tease the release of the new song Now Or Never, which also happens to be the 6th track on the album. Halsey seems to be giving clues, because the song on its own is about The Lovers who are so impatient and just want to be together despite forces in the universe tearing them apart. In her directorial debut, Halsey creates scenes between music including a verbal fight about how she loves her man, a tarot card reading session about how her pure love will endure, but that there may be an interference because their souls may never align—welcoming the infamous star-crossed lovers theme.
The video and song can have contradictory themes, as Halsey escapes a car during a gun massacre and drives away from her love on a motorbike ending the video. Through the song lyrics, Halsey seems to be giving her lover an ultimatum; either lover her now or love her never. Her lover has a decision to make, but she lets him know that he has no more time, and will have to make his decision to love her or leave her now.
