Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays! Its a time of creativity and imagination, a time where you can be anything you can think of! A time to embrace your fears, even if its the one time of year you do. Lately Halloween has been treated like Christmas, schools won't have Halloween parties/parades and its been getting passed over in stores. Some places are just going straight to putting up Christmas decorations. Halloween is a holiday that deserves some love!
Before people just disregard Halloween as an evil spirited holiday I feel that people need to know the history in order to appreciate it. Most people believe that Halloween is based off of a celtic summers-end festival. This festival meant that the harvest was ending and winter was beginning. It was a time of family, community and celebration where the dead were honored. This was the one day a year they believed the spirits could slip from the other side into our world to offer advice to their families.
Halloween has many traditions that have helped my family grow. Whether decorating the house, carving pumpkins, making pumpkin seeds and watching movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas. Activities devoted to self expression and family bonding deserve to be celebrated! I have some of my favorite memories associated with this day, and even if the holiday itself isn't celebrated the traditions in itself are very rooted in the fall season.
Besides the sale of candy increasing exponentially, sales in East Lansing also increase drastically! However, with Halloween being on a Monday this year the sales won't be as much compared to Halloween falling on a Saturday. I feel as though Halloween should automatically be on the last Saturday of October in order to accommodate kids in schools and businesses.
Whether you use Halloween as a time to express yourself, or a time to party just embrace the spirit of the holiday and get your spooky on!
