After a long year, we are finally almost back to October (thank the Lord above). In order to kick start this wonderful season that is Halloween, I have handpicked 31 movies you need to watch this season. So settle in, grab some wine, snacks, and blankets and spend these beautiful days watching some of the world's best Halloween/horror movies. 31 movies = 1 per day. No excuses!

Monster House

Remember this classic when you were a kid? "Monster House" was so underrated and needs more appreciation.

"Three teens discover that their neighbor's house is really a living, breathing, scary monster." -IMDb

Hocus Pocus

Giphy

Is it even Halloween if you don't watch Hocus Pocus at least three times? A.K.A., this is a Halloween staple, people! Freeform is playing this movie 210821091 times this Halloween and I am so here for it!

"A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century." -IMDb

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Giphy

My mom absolutely loves this movie and would watch it with us every Halloween. Even though all of us are older, we still try our best to keep up the tradition. The movie is only 25 minutes long and brings us back to our first feeling of Halloween!

"The Peanuts gang celebrates Halloween while Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin." -IMDb

Beetlejuice

Giphy

We all know that one person who is obsessed with Beetlejuice. Although this isn't as horrifying as say, "Nightmare On Elm Street", this movie is always a hit.

"The spirits of a deceased couple are harassed by an unbearable family that has moved into their home, and hire a malicious spirit to drive them out" -IMDb

The Sixth Sense

Giphy

I can't tell you why, but I've watched this movie more times than I can count. Although a bit scary, it is such a great movie. Without giving it away, this movie has such an unexpected ending!

"A boy who communicates with spirits seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist." -IMDb

Nightmare on Elm Street

Giphy

Honestly, this movie is straight creepy and still gives me the chills when I watch it. Freddy freaks me out. But hey, that's Halloween so damn right I watch it!

"The monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer seeks revenge by invading the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his untimely death." -IMDb

Zombieland

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqmjFe8ic0k

Here's another laid back Halloween movie with a hint of horror. I honestly find this movie kind of funny. A lot of people hate on it. You decide!

"A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the last Twinkie, and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park join forces to travel across a zombie-filled America." -IMDb

Twitches

Ah, Twitches. I love, love, love Twitches! Something about taking me back to in my pj's on the couch at 7pm watching with my little sister is something I will always cherish. I mean, how can you hate these ladies? Oh, don't forget there is a "Twitches, Too"!

"Two teen witches who were separated at birth and were adopted by two different families meet on their 21st birthday and must use their powers to save the world in which they were born, where their birth mother still lives." -IMDb

The Shining

Giphy

This is another one I can't sit still through. It creeps me out. But, again, let's get creepy! I think it's obligatory to see The Shining at least once. Stephen King has one wild mind.

"A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future." -IMDb

FREE on AMC Fear Fest

Ghostbusters

You know who to call! I can't say this is a horror movie, but it sure is hilarious and comes with a catchy song that is absolutely impossible to get out of your head. Ghostbusters is a must watch this season (even if you have seen it 12371981 times like me). Also, can we talk about how there is going to be a 2020 remake?!

"Three former parapsychology professors set up shop as a unique ghost removal service." -IMDb

Carrie

Giphy

Oh, Stephen King. How you never fail to impress us! Carrie is my sister's name, so you know I used to use this against her when I saw this! I haven't seen this movie in years so this is definitely on my watch list this year!

"Carrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom" -IMDb

Halloweentown (...all of them!!)

How could you even forget about Halloweentown?! I love every single one of these movies (yes, there is more than one!). Keep an eye out on the Disney Channel this October because they play it all the time! You cannot do Halloween without watching Halloweentown! Why is Disney so good to us? No matter how old I am, this will always be on my list!

"After learning she is a witch, a girl helps save a town full of other supernatural creatures." -IMDb

 Friday the 13th

Giphy

Friday the 13th and Jason are also used as a basis for haunted houses and hayrides! I mean, can you really be into the Halloween spirit without watching Jason?

"A group of camp counselors are stalked and murdered by an unknown assailant while trying to reopen a summer camp which, years before, was the site of a child's drowning." -IMDb

FREE on AMC Fear Fest

 Nightmare Before Christmas

When I was younger, I would actually watch this movie over and over again. Every time I saw it on, I would watch it. Honestly, I still put it on when I see it's playing! Also, I watch this at Christmas, too. No shame. Tim Burton is a hero.

"Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion" -IMDb

The Addams Family

Giphy

This bunch isn't as scary as they appear. The Addams Family is a stable Halloween movie and they, too (like Ghostbusters) have an "can't-get-out-of-your-head" song. I suggest the 1991 movie, but there is a cute animated one coming out this October! This movie will leave you smiling!

"Con artists plan to fleece an eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle." -IMDb

 Coraline

Giphy

Don't let the animation fool you. This movie is actually pretty creepy! I remember watching this as a 12-year-old thinking it wouldn't be that bad. Well, 12-year-old me was wrong. Today, I love this movie! It just isn't a cute movie as it may seem.

"An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets." -IMDb

 Haunted Mansion

Giphy

I'm a bit bias, but I have never hated an Eddie Murphy movie. Haunted Mansion came out in 2003 (what?!), and I still watch it today!

"A realtor and his wife and children are summoned to a mansion, which they soon discover is haunted, and while they attempt to escape, he learns an important lesson about the family he has neglected." -IMDb

 Halloween

Giphy

Michael Myers, one of the faces of Halloween. This classic movie still gives me the chills but a movie you have to at least watch once this season!

"Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again." -IMDb

FREE on AMC Fear Fest

 The Exorcist

This is an older movie, but comes on AMC and some other stations every once in a while during Halloween. Did you know it's supposed to be based on a true story? That's Halloween in a nutshell! This is a horror movie so if you're looking for something not as intense, stay away! I think it was pretty good for a 1973 movie!

"When a teenage girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter." -IMDb

FREE on AMC Fear Fest

Edward Scissorhands

Giphy

This is another lighter movie! It still has what it takes to be acceptable for Halloween, but a great movie to sit back and watch. This was a staple in my house! I mean...Johnny Depp and Tim Burton? Hello power team!

"An artificial man, who was incompletely constructed and has scissors for hands, leads a solitary life. Then one day, a suburban lady meets him and introduces him to her world". -IMDb

 Casper

Giphy

This is a cute Halloween movie I used to watch over my grandmothers every Halloween. This is another movie I haven't seen in ages. Casper is a poster character for Halloween so it is only right to give him a watch!

"An afterlife therapist and his daughter meet a friendly young ghost when they move into a crumbling mansion in order to rid the premises of wicked spirits." -IMDb

 IT

Giphy

Whether you see the 1990, 2017, or the newest (3-hour long) 2019 version, IT is a classic. Clowns like Pennywise are the basis for many haunted houses and movies. It definitely freaks me out a bit!

"In 1960, seven pre-teen outcasts fight an evil demon who poses as a child-killing clown. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the demon once and for all when it returns to their hometown." -IMDb

 Paranormal Activity

Giphy

How many of these are there? Six? Twenty? Who knows. Either way, these movies give viewers a more "realistic" feel which puts on a fear factor! The Paranormals are great to binge together!

FREE on AMC Fear Fest

 The Corpse Bride

Another prime example of the beautiful result of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Although this doesn't get as much hype as The Nightmare Before Christmas, this is a great movie that should be on your list!

"When a shy groom practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her." -IMDb

FREE on Freeform During 31 Nights Of Halloween

 Scream

Giphy

An oldie but goodie! This 1996 movie is always a good watch during the Halloween season and has three sequels. If you're in a funny mood, watch the spoof, Scary Movie!

"A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game." -IMDb

Netflix Link

 Child's Play

Giphy

I know he's a doll and all, but Chucky also freaks me out. However, he is a part of a classic Halloween movie that we must not forget. There are more than one movie as well!

"A single mother gives her son a much sought-after doll for his birthday, only to discover that it is possessed by the soul of a serial killer." -IMDb

FREE on AMC Fear Fest (Curse of Chucky)

 Jeepers Creepers

Giphy

This is actually one of my favorites on the list! It is definitely creepy (as intended in the title), but it is such a great watch! It's a classic Halloween movie with multiple sequels and versions. This should definitely be on your list this October!

"A brother and sister driving home through isolated countryside for spring break encounter a flesh-eating creature which is in the midst of its ritualistic eating spree." -IMDb

FREE on Syfy during 31 Days of Halloween

 Texas Chainsaw

If you didn't get chased by someone dressed like this guy in a haunted house, did you even go to a haunted house? Chainsaws are now used all the time to freak out participants and here is what started it all. This movie also has sequels and different versions!

"After picking up a traumatized young hitchhiker, five friends find themselves stalked and hunted by a deformed chainsaw-wielding loon and his family of equally psychopathic killers." -IMDb

FREE on Syfy during 31 Days of Halloween

 Blair Witch Project

Giphy

This movie gives you the chills! It leaves you on the edge of your seat. There have been remakes which aren't too bad as well!

"Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind." -IMDb

 Rocky Horror Picture Show

Giphy

Because why not? Horror is in the name, right?

"A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter." -IMDb

Amazon Rental ($3.99)

 The Ring

Giphy

I have to leave you off on a horror movie, right? Of course! Even if you haven't seen this movie, you've probably seen her face. Everywhere. (A.K.A., that video of the car driving all calmly on an open road on a hill and BAM). I swear it's her face that makes this movie scarier than others.

"A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it." -IMBd

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

1815
The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
