Over this past weekend of Halloween festivities I witnessed a lot of good moves and a lot of really really bad ones when it came to costumes. This a compilation of what I learned about others and myself this weekend.
Don't Number 1
Do not wear a wig! It seems like a great idea and like it will complete your outfit and make people know exactly what you are, but trust me friends it is not worth it. I learned this the hard way this year. To begin with, you pull it out of the plastic and it is crumpled up and tangled, and brushing it is a nightmare. Then if you bought one for $16.99 or cheaper it is synthetic aka you can't curl it or straighten it so you're forced to wear it while it's all messed up. And to conclude, when you get to the party I promise it will come off. Whether it is on purpose or not, you will not return with that wig and then you're stuck with you weird scrunched down hair for the rest of the night. Case closed, wigs are a no go.
Don't Number 2
Don't wear heels. Although again it seems cute and fun, it isn't. Wear wedges and save your feet or you will be jealous of all your friends who did that. Whether you're going to a fraternity or a family party, both will be more enjoyable if your feet aren't killing you all night.
Do Number 1
Wear face paint or fun makeup! First of all, this is way better than a mask because you can breathe and aren't hot and dying under there, and second of all, when else are you going to get the chance to paint your face like crazy? Watch the tutorials and put as much glitter on your face as your heart desires because it's halloween and you only get the chance to look ridiculous and try out the weird colors in your eyeshadow palette once a year!
Do Number 2
Make your costume or buy it at a thrift store. I know not everyone is great with DIY projects, but spending $50 on a costume that you're only wearing this year is kind of outrageous and something I've never been able to make myself do. If anything, buy accessories from the halloween shop, but for the main outfit GoodWill and Salvation Army are my go to stores. There are so many great ideas for costumes on Pinterest and in magazines, there's no way you can't find one that you like and is at your DIY skill level.
Do Number 3
Be comfortable. No part of a halloween party is fun if you're pulling at your costume all night so think of a costume you know you will enjoy and go for it. If you're comfortable in a little dress with some bomb heels then do it, but if you would rather wear a big t-shirt then call yourself a shacker and go with it.
