Halloween is one of the best times for movies, more specifically Disney Channel Original movies. If you're like me and absolutely hate horror films then movies made by Disney are the perfect option to get you in the spirit this year. While my sisters and I had some downtime this past week we decided to pretend to be kids again and watch all of our favorite Halloween movies from the 1990s and 2000s. These Disney Halloween Channel Original Movies brought us back to our childhood and some of them we had forgotten about until we looked up a complete list of Disney Channel Original Movies. Here are our favorites we think you should prioritize watching this year:
"Tower Of Terror" (1997): Although it may be lesser known, "Tower of Terror" has been a family favorite for as long as we can remember. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a watch. Surprisingly twisted and scary, but with a great ending that will warm you heart, the film is a great testament to sisterhood, which is why my sisters and I connected to it so much growing up. Inspired by the ride at Disney World, this movie has a thoughtful and well-written storyline with many dynamic characters. Not to mention it features '90s hunk, Steven Guttenberg and a pre-"Bring It On" Kirsten Dunst.
"Under Wraps" (1997): Who didn't fall in love with Harold the Mummy and want to keep him as a pet while watching this movie? Although I can't know for sure, I associate this film with first introducing me to ancient Egyptian myths. It brought an element of historical intrigue to a classic Halloween story, and I always felt very scholarly watching it. Plus Harold goes to Dairy Freeze (eerily similar to Dairy Queen), so that went a long way with me as a kid. The three best friends work together to save Harold from the bad guy, and learn a great lesson about tolerance.
"Halloweentown" (1998): A classic for all '90s kids, this is probably the Halloween movie that defines our generation. A bit overplayed and just a little overrated, it's still a must-see each year around Halloween. It's the first of four films in the series that are all amazing. I'm a big fan of the third installment, "Halloweentown High," because I found it really relatable during my angsty middle school years. In case you haven't noticed a trend, my sisters and I really liked movies that showcase the bond of siblings through adversity growing up. I guess that's also a common theme found throughout Disney films from the '90s/'00s, so kudos to Disney for teaching kids to appreciate their siblings. And come on, who didn't wake up every Halloween desperately hoping it would be the year they find out they're a witch or a wizard and that Halloweentown really does exist?
"Phantom of the Megaplex" (2000):A film full of suspense and mystery, this movie definitely had me on the edge of my seat as a little girl. If I'm being honest, for a long time I didn't understand that "Phantom of the Megaplex" was a take on "Phantom of the Opera," and I definitely thought the Broadway play was a ripoff of the Disney movie. I blame my parents, but I have since become educated and culture. Every time I watch this movie I'm brought back to my childhood and how I thought working in a movie theater looked like the coolest job ever. This is a great movie about siblings learning to work together and trust each other in order to catch the bad guy.
"Twitches" (2005): If the bond of sisterhood in this movie doesn't make you tear up, I don't know what will. It's the most recent film that was very influential on me growing up, but Disney definitely did something right with it. I'm personally a big fan of the realm "Twitches" brings its audience, too. It gave my sisters and I a sliver of hope that maybe we're secretly princesses of a faraway land in a different dimension. You can't prove that we're not. This film definitely had the best Disney villain ever: The Darkness. The Darkness gave me my first real nightmares, which have scarred me ever since.
