Halloween Candy: Which One Reigns Above The Others?

What's your favorite Halloween candy?

Halloween is finally upon us! My favorite holiday and the day that my soul is the happiest.

Halloween season doesn't just bring on awesome movies, costume parties, and fake spiderwebs. It also brings lots and lots of candy. Bad for people on a diet, but great for kids going out trick-or-treating.

There's candy in the stores all the time, sure, but Halloween is a holiday where you can chow down on the candy that you don't really get to eat the rest of the year. I've picked up a Hershey's bar at CVS in July when I want to satisfy my craving for chocolate but I've never walked out of a store with a bag of Whoopers or a Butterfinger in my hand. That's because some candy is just special to Halloween. Kind of like how a Cadberry Cream Egg is specific to Easter and candy canes for Christmas.

I mean, candy corn is the candy people think of the most with Halloween, whether you love it or hate it, but no one receives candy corn in their bag while trick-or-treating. You get the really good stuff like Snickers and Twix.

Of course, there's always houses that give out other more "unique" things and I don't really know why people get creative like that because kids just want the classic stuff like Pixy Stick and chocolate bars.

My favorites have changed over the years as I've gotten older but if someone was to ask me my favorite Halloween candy right now I would have to say KitKat. Such a classic. It's satisfying to eat because you can break it off in neat proportions and if you accidentally eat too much you don't tend to get too sick (which you shouldn't do by the way). I love the white and orange ones too! On the more sugary, sweet side my favorite candy is Swedish fish but getting that on Halloween when I was younger was like striking gold. So because it wasn't as common, Starburst moved to the top of my list.

So as a friend and I were filing candy bags (full of Milky Way, 3 Musketeer, Snickers, Starburst, Twix, and Skittles) for Halloween night at my house, we were discussing our favorite candy and what we like to eat at Halloween now that we're in our 20s.

This prompted me to take a little poll through text and Facebook, pulling from family and friends, and I just asked them what their number one, all-time, favorite Halloween candy is.

Here are my results: coming in last place were candy bars like Payday (although this one is highly underrated), Crunch, and peanut M&Ms. Rounding out the middle was Milky Way and Snickers. Second place was given to KitKat and coming in with a landslide at first place was Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

Now, I didn't ask anyone of trick-or-treating age this question, but I don't think that matters too much. So when you're in the candy isle for next Halloween, whether you're throwing a party or passing out candy, just remember that your safe bets are most likely candy bars like Reese's, KitKat, Milky Way, and Snickers.

Happy Halloween!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
