Halloweek: 8 days, 9 costumes

Halloween is serious business.

Halloweek: 8 days, 9 costumes

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays as I love to dress up. Starting last year, I began dressing up everyday, for the week of Halloween, aka Halloweek. When I do this, most parts of my costumes come from my closet – a good chunk of my character representation come from dressing in their color palette. This idea is also inspired by Leslie Kay's Disneybounding as well. So as Halloween is/was on a Monday this year, there's many costumes that have been worn and here they are.

1. Monday: Goofy (Disney) - Black shirt, orange cardigan, jeans, brown boots, and a little hat crafting with felt, cardboard, a headband and glue for the hat. I also put my hair in pigtails to represent Goofy's ears and drew on a nose with some eyeliner.

2. Tuesday: Marceline (Adventure Time) & Emily, The Corpse Bride (The Corpse Bride - Marceline's getup included all black, a red/black/white plaid shirt, a long black wig, and some lip gloss for the blood. Emily's outfit was made of a white dress with a draped white sheet pinned to the dress, a dark blue wig, and a headband with a light blue (50's style) scarf/ascot sort of thing.

3. Wednesday: Wednesday Addams (The Addams Family) - Wednesday's outfit consisted of a black dress, black socks, and black shoes. I wore the same wig I wore for Marceline, but braided them for the true essence of Wednesday. Looking dead inside helped really capture Wednesday's personality type.

4. Thursday: Hades (Disney's Hercules) - This one was a little last minute, since I was possibly going to be working all day. I threw on a black shirt with my work pants and shoes (both are black). I put on the wig I used for Emily on Tuesday and BAM, a genderbent Hades.

5. Friday: Wendy Darling (Disney's Peter Pan) - Wendy Darling was one of my favorites to wear because I basically wore PJ's all day. I wore a black dress underneath a light blue nightgown I found at Goodwill for like $3. I paired these with my black flats and a ribbon in my (tied-back) hair.

6. Saturday: 50's Sockhop Gal - This one was an actual costume. My mom bought me this one at Walmart because I thought it was cute (and I'll probably wear it when it isn't Halloween too). The costume came with the dress and scarf paired it with my white shoes.

7. Sunday: Jaq (Disney's Cinderella): I used a very large shirt I bought last year for my Lilo costume and paired it with the same orange cardigan I used for Goofy. I then glued some cardboard shaped ears to a red hat and drew a nose and whiskers to capture my mousiness.

8. HALLOWEEN Monday: Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls) - A purple dress, a pink sweater--custom painted by yours truly, a pink headband and white socks worn with my black flats.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
