It's The Most Wonderful Time of the year!
Pumpkin spice lattes, oversized sweatshirts with leggings, leaves turning, and my ultimate favorite holiday of the year, Halloween! Where did this awesome holiday come from?
Halloween was known as a Celtic festival of Samhain. They celebrated the final harvest before the grips of winter came. People would would makes huge bonfires, sacrifice animals, and crops to Celtic Deities. They would dress up to protect themselves from the walking dead. As it was believed, the dead only walked the Earth on Halloween. Whoa! That is scary!
Then it became a holiday that Pope Gregory the Third designated to honor all the Saints and martyrs of the time. Known as, “All Saints Day,” which also included some of the traditions of Samhain because of the mixture of Christianity and Pagan beliefs. The name became, “All Hallows Eve,” which we now know as Halloween.
Halloween is now known for, “trick or treaters,” carving pumpkins, parties, and other festivities all around the world. Interestingly enough, we still dress up, pretending to be who we want to be, or maybe for some suspicious reasons, to walk among the dead disguised!
Did you know that one quarter of all candy sold in the United States alone, is purchased for Halloween!
If you are trying to look smart, I hope my history lesson helped! Hope you enjoyed this little lesson. Be careful on Halloween, you never know who might pop out to get you!
I’m just kidding! Always a pleasure Darlings.
