It's that time of the year again — the time for hot cocoa, twinkling lights, and Hallmark movies. This is one of my favorite time of the year. Recently, I have found myself watching countless Hallmark Christmas movies.
Instead of watching TV shows on Netflix, I have been into Netflix original movies and Hallmark live TV. This is mind-blowing to me, but I just can't stop! All of these movies are all so similar, so I feel like I am watching the same movie over and over again. I think that these cheesy romance movies fall into three different categories.
#1 - The first of these categories is either the male or female lead goes back to where they grew up, and they fall into back into a relationship that they have already been in. The character coming back home usually left to go find work and follow their dreams. They come back to find that they love where they grew up, and they love the person that they left. Usually, at the end of this movie, the characters end up getting back together and staying in their hometown together. There is a lot talk about "meant to be" and the timing of relationships. "The Holiday Calendar" and "Christmas In Evergreen" are two excellent examples of this one.
#2 - Another popular type of this movie is between a workaholic and an unexpected love interest. The workaholic usually thinks that they don't have time to celebrate Christmas time or to have a romantic relationship. They are too busy and consumed with their work that they don't consider anything else. They keep putting off the idea of a relationship because of their work, prior commitments, or baggage from past relationships. We see this type of relationship in "Christmas With View" on Netflix, and "Road To Christmas" on the Hallmark Channel.
#3 - The third-holiday movie you see a lot is when a commoner come in contact with a royal family from a foreign country. It is usually a country with a lot of snow and a handsome prince or king. This is a complete fairytale type movie. The prince or king falls head over heels for the beautiful common women. They go through the struggles of being in the public's eye and coming from different worlds. In the end, the female lead usually picks up her life and move to live in the royal palace. This exactly what happens in "Christmas At The Palace" and "The Princess Switch."
Now, not every movie falls into these three categories, but most of them do. No matter what the plot of the movie is, you can always count on a cheesy romance, lots of Christmas trees and a feel-good time!
