Why I dislike Hallmark's Christmas Movies
It's for a legitimate reason too.
Just like many of you, I love Hallmark. Their stores are just wonderful. They carry some of the most adorable gifts. They make some of the best cards you'll ever see. Their TV channel is phenomenal... until Christmas time.
It's not that I have some special hatred for Hallmark. As I said, I love their company, their stores, their products, everything. I love their TV channel because some of my favorite shows come on there, like The Golden Girls, I Love Lucy, and Little House on the Prairie. I watch Hallmark year round, until December rolls around. This is for several reasons, one of the biggest being that their Christmas movies, seem to always have the same plot. From what I've seen, it seems like just about every Christmas movie that comes on that channel is about love, the lack thereof, or finding love. I mean, that's fine, but not for Christmas time. Christmas is somewhat about love, but I just feel like Christmas should be more about being grateful, family, and, most importantly, remembering Christ (for those who are Christians). I understand that they have an extremely diverse audience to cater too, but it just bothers me sometimes that they don't showcase the true meaning of Christmas in their programs this time of year. It's all about love and budding relationships, too me, that just doesn't feel like Christmas.
Another reason that I dislike Hallmark around the holidays is because of their failure to recognize and promote tradition. Personally, I believe that traditions are a huge part of not just growing up, but the Christmas season in general. My family is all about traditions when it comes close to Christmas, and honestly, I'm glad they are. I just think that it adds something more to the holidays when you're able to show your younger siblings Christmas specials that have been on since the television was invented, things like "A Miracle on 34th Street", "Frosty the Snowman", "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and Dr. Seuss's "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", or later even ones, such as "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (which my family watches every year on Christmas Eve). Because Hallmark only plays Christmas movies about finding love during the holidays, you can't pass on those traditions through them. You have to do it by way of ABC Family's "25 Days of Christmas", which is fine, but it would be nice if Hallmark could try to incorporate tradition a little bit more.
