While applying for a dorm previous to arriving at NC State, I was unsure if I wanted to be in a suite or a hall. I ended up getting my third choice, Alexander Residence Hall, and I am so happy I did. Living in a hall is full of excitement and these are some of my favorite reasons why.
The People
There are 60 residents on my hall, 30 girls on one half, and 30 guys on the other. We have a male and female resident advisor for each side of the hall. My favorite part of Alexander Hall is the people, it is a great way to get to know others. There are such a variety of people that I have been able to become friends with that I could of never met being in a suite. There have been several times I run into girls walking to the bathroom and we end up sitting on the floor talking for thirty minutes, forgetting why we left our dorms in the first place. These moments are what make people who were once strangers feel like family.
The Unexpected
The other night as I was walking back to my room, I see all the guys down the hall approach their RA's door with a very large horn. The group of boys blow the horn and immediately after the RA runs out chasing them, shaking his fist, until they all stop to laugh. As this happens I see each girl pop their head out of the rooms one by one, very confused as to what just happen. The unexpected events like this one is what makes me say, "I love college."
The Doors
On move in day our RA, Maranda, put each of our names on the doors. Each door looked the same, but overtime they grew identities. Some students added chalk boards and welcome signs and even a 8 foot clown in honor of Halloween approaching. After sorority recruitment girls who were in sorties got their letters put on their door. Now each trip down the hall is like a short walk through a gallery. Each door is unique to the residents who live there.
Wether you live in a hall, suite, or apartment, being apart of your own little community is meaningful. Meet your neighbors, accept the crazy, and embrace the individuality. And to Alexander Residence Hall, thanks for being my new home.
