Hair Hack: 4 Hairstyles for When Your Roots Grow Out

Whether you dyed your hair lighter or darker, roots can be a real bitch when they start growing in. When it comes time to dye them again, you can either go darker to match your natural color or you can bleach your hair again. Touching up your roots is time consuming and expensive and maybe you haven’t gotten around to scheduling a salon appointment. Or maybe you’re going the healthy route and letting your roots grow into a natural or reverse ombre. Let me start off by saying that letting your roots show is not as taboo as it was 10-15 years ago. Perhaps you don't like the contrast of your natural hair color against the color you chose to dye it and you feel awkward about that in between stage where a third of your hair is dark brown and the rest is platinum blonde. Here are some hairstyles you can try while your roots are coming in:

1. French braid/boxer braids

This look is classic, but it’s especially great for blending your roots to your processed color. See how her brown roots just effortlessly blend into the blonde in the braid? If you’re worried about how the back of your hair will look in two braids with the contrast of your regrowth, try doing just one french braid. If you’re like me and this look doesn’t come so easy to you, watch a tutorial on how to do them for one braid or for two braids.

2. Double bun

This Princess Leia/Baby Spice look is making a comeback from the 90’s and I’m so happy about it. The double bun is perfect to throw together when you’re in a rush on your way out the door, but you don’t want to be boring and do a single bun. It’s also so quirky and fresh that the style alone can take the attention away from your roots growing back. You can opt to place them higher, as pictured above, or lower, but I find that if they’re placed higher, it’s easier for your roots to blend into the buns (and if you stick your tongue out, you can have a Miley Cyrus moment.)

3. Headband/bandana/head scarf

Headbands are a must for when your roots are starting to grow back in and luckily for you, thick headbands, like the one pictured above, are so in style right now. Or may I suggest getting a head scarf and trying out different ties with it? You can get bright, solid colors to match your graphic tees or trendy, patterned headbands, bandanas and headscarves to match your plain white tee. Either way, all the focus will go straight to your headband, while keeping your roots hidden.

4. Baseball cap

Baseball caps for ladies are so in right now and ideal for covering those pesky roots. You can support your favorite sports team or college, all while hiding your roots. Check out a couple of my personal favorite hats: Ralph Lauren, uh huh honey, NASA.

When your roots are showing, you want to hide them and these hair hacks will hide them with ease. So before you run to get your roots bleached, try these effortless hairstyles.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
