When I first started my natural hair journey, nearly five years ago, there was a major change. The natural hair trend has grown so much that African American women across the country are putting down the chemicals and are starting to embrace their natural hair. When I decided to make the leap of fate and stopped using relaxers, my self confidence began to fade. I no longer fit into the stigma of the average black woman. I gradually cut my relaxed ends off and decided to start my loc journey. There are many ways to start the process of having locs, also known as dreads, but I decided to start using the two strand twist method. The first year of my loc journey, also known as the ugly stage, was by far humbling. It wasn't until about a year and a half into my journey when my twists finally started looking like the traditional locs. THAT is when I noticed a change...
As my hair grew, so did the attention. When I could finally be classified as a "dread head" that's when I started to receive much more attention. So the question is, "Does hair = attraction ?"
Is it only because I have locs that I am more attractive to females?
As my hair continues to grow, so has the number of compliments.
I am sure that I'm not the only dread-head who has noticed this simple change. It only makes me question the sincerity of the compliments and if people are attracted to me ONLY because of my hair.
