Hair Experiments?

So many colors & lengths why not try them all?

I love hair! I like curly, straight, wavy hair! I was really close to pursuing a career in Cosmetology, which entails working with hair, makeup and nails. I discovered I enjoyed experimenting with hair in middle school. That was when I began dying my hair. I have had my hair brown-red, dark brown, light brown, dark black, half red, half pink, half purple and caramel highlights. (I'd totally show pictures- but that means exposing my pictures from middle school and that AIN'T going to happen).

When I would dye it in middle and high school I used the hair dyes from Wal-Mart. I would do it myself and it would last for about three months. When I saw it fading I would get excited and began to think of a different new color to try.

In previous articles I have mentioned how I like a change in my routine and that goes for almost everything I do. I enjoyed starting the school year, semester with a new hairstyle. Something had to change whether it was a hair cut or hair color.

Aside from dying it, I also began to style it. In seventh grade I discovered the straightener. My hair is naturally curly; I mean I wouldn’t straighten my hair EVERY day, just more than I like to count. What I did not discover though was the heat protectant. So yes as you can imagine I damaged my hair REALLY bad. It turned out to be dry and filled with split ends. I was set on having long hair so I did not cut it much, YEAH I KNOW!

Sooner or later I figured it was what I had to do because it could grow back and it did. Towards the end of high school I decided to cut my hair once. I had a salon where I would always go with my family, however once they left my hair uneven. Not EXTREMELY uneven but enough to notice. My haircut did not come out that bad actually; I just decided to take the scissors in my hands after a five minute YouTube video. I cut my sister’s hair once too into a v-shape, it looked amazing…(well you know at least even).

Let me get back to the hairstyling. I completely LOVE to style hair. Whether mine, my sister, mom, friend, whoever! Of course NOW I use the heat protectant. But I find it very therapeutic when I style hair. It only takes me about 20 minutes or so to do mine (depending whether I straighten it or do tight/loose curls). There are times when I offer my friends to curl their hair because I really enjoy it. I used to curl my hair at the USU restrooms sometimes (I’d get there early). I once curled my friends hair there too because she had a presentation, so I brought in a chair and everything (again it was early) but it was fun!

Either way, styling hair is one of MANY hobbies. I had fun experimenting with it whether it was with scissors or colors. I always encourage my friends to cut their own hair but they think I am crazy. You just never know until you try it! These are the BEST years to experiment with hair! I may just dye it one of these colors because aren't they HOT?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
