Over the past couple of summers, I have worked at a hair salon as a receptionist and assistant and have seen just how much a new hairdo can change a person. They usually come in frazzled and not feeling themselves, and leave like they are Beyoncé in a music video *cue the fans*. Some people might take this transformation as something that is just rooted in vanity, but honestly, I believe that when you look good, you feel better.
Hair. It is something that most people on this planet have, regardless of whether or not they want it. Personally, my hair has always been a way for me to take risks, express myself, and just have a little fun. It's been almost every color in the rainbow, it's been long and short, and it was always just a way for me to do something different.
Now the key of that thought is that looking good is completely subjective to what you think that is, so for some is wavy blonde hair and to others, it's a neon pink mullet, regardless it is what makes them feel like themselves.
Just like our clothes or our nail color or whatever you display to the world, it is a way that we nonverbally communicate to other what we are like. Now obviously our aesthetic is just part of who we are, but without it, we can be left lacking the confidence and put-togetherness we normally have. People might think that it is just something about "looking good," but the reality is that it connects to something deeper than just looks.
The biggest thing I began to notice when I mentioned that I worked at a hair salon is that many people would react to it as if it was some frivolous thing. As if it was ridiculous to spend all that money just on some dead cells that are on your head. But people who say that don't realize that looking good and feeling good are very much correlated.
At the end of the day I think everyone should take some more time to consider if they are externally communicating what they feel internal because as much as we say we don't, we judge people based on looks. So if you know you are going to be judged, don't you want to put out the you that makes you feel the best?
