Los Angeles native, Hailee Steinfeld, 19, is ready to make her mark on the world of music. The actress, model, and now singer, got her start at the age of 13. Her first major role was in the 2010 film "True Grit," earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
During her transition from actress to vocalist, Steinfeld starred in "Pitch Perfect 2" as Emily Junk, where she debuted her singing voice with a cover of the song “Flashlight” by Jessie J. This last year, the singer made an appearance in Queen of Hollywood’s, Taylor Swift, music video for “Bad Blood” alongside a long list of familiar faces.
Steinfeld signed to Republic Records last year after being introduced to Charlie Walk, vice president of the record company, at a dinner event in New York. After showing him some of her demos, and keeping in touch for weeks, things just fell into place for her.
This summer, she premiered her first single “Love Myself,” which has topped the charts, making it to the summer’s Hot 100. The song was an anthem for people everywhere to keep their heads up, and be in love with themselves before anyone else can bring them down. Solid advice.
This November, the chart-topping artist dropped her first EP, "Haiz."The set is a fun contribution to pop music. It will have listeners involuntarily bobbing their heads and moving their shoulders along to the beat. Somehow, Steinfeld manages to put her PG words into phrases that will still give a kick in the pants to any heartbreaking perpetrator.
Steinfeld describes her music as “unique pop.” As most artists in the beginning stages of their career, she is still working on developing and finding her sound. Right now, Hailee’s sound is edgy and badass. It seems that each of her songs is a different way of telling someone to buzz off, with a beat and rhythm behind it.
Like any other teenage music lover, Steinfeld is obsessed with Demi Lovato’s music along with Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. She has looked to Taylor Swift for advice. In an interview with Vogue, she disclosed that some of the best words of wisdom Swift gave her were, “You’re going to have to make a lot of decisions—make sure it’s you that’s making them.” Although she said, at the time, she didn’t completely understand what T-Swift was talking about. As her career in music progresses, she acknowledges that, “It wasn’t until I had to start making decisions that I realized how many people are involved and how important it is that my decisions are being made.”
Keep an eye out for Hailee as she takes on the world of music with confidence and a smile. Most recently, you could have seen her perform on the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball stage earlier this month.
