I learned about haikus during my language arts and writing classes in elementary and middle schools. For a quick explanation, haikus are Japanese poems with stanzas including five, seven and then five syllables. For instance:
This is a poem
With seven, then five and then
Seven syllables.
See? Easy peasy.
It can be more complicated as we see below. This is a series of haikus that I wrote over the course of many years. It started with the first stanza that I wrote when I was 10 when staring dreamily around my kitchen. I enjoyed writing with imagery, metaphors and similes. I also managed to craft a multi-stanza haiku series which would be more common in western poetry. Enjoy.
"You and I"
You and I are sun
As night walks into the face
And smile of morning.
You and I are stars
As light comes from far above
And shapes many gods.
You and I are sound
As music sings from voices
And floats into ears.
You and I are up
In the sky, flying towards space
That will never end.
You and I are here,
There, everywhere, anywhere,
Somewhere, and nowhere.
You and I are peace,
Wartime, depression, the end,
And the beginning.
You and I are now
With the future moving like
A white flame dancing.
You and I are
Events etched into rock
Will never break down.
You and I are blue
Oceans breaking down cliff sides
Keeping them for us.
You and I are night
As sun walks into the face
And smile of evening.
