We've all seen the average war movies. You either love them or hate them. What we tend to forget though is the realism that is portrayed from the films. The main character, Desmond Doss, goes into the war with the belief that God does not want him to use a gun to kill people, but instead to be a medic.
This was very strange to hear to the other men who were there to fight and kill. They did not understand why this deranged man thought he was going to survive in the war without a weapon. Little did they know that this man was going to end up saving their lives. The movie was remarkable and won many awards because of that.
The film truly portrays the real effect of the war and adds just the right amount of emotional quality to it. The story was based on true events and really captured the moment in the drama. The battle took place a top of a sharp mountainside. Desmond would help lower the wounded soldiers over the side of the cliff and place them gently to the ground feet below. They would be sent into immediate care and their lives were spared by Desmond.
The film earned a 10-minute standing ovation at the red carpet premiere. Doss, the actual person who the movie was based on, never lived to see his life hit the big screen. He died in 2006 and before he died he never agreed to any writers having the chance to make his story into a movie. Critiques have said that if he was alive today, he would have been satisfied with the making of the movie because it portrayed how the war actually was and the hardships he endured. We really do not understand what these men are going through today while fighting, but this movie gives us a pretty good insight on the facts. For anyone who has not seen the film, I strongly encourage you to see it.
