While this isn't headlining news, it certainly is a cute pop-up. Our favorite mermaids Cleo, Emma, and Rikki are back in the early-2000s favorite H2O: Just Add Water, now available on Netflix.
The series begins with friends Cleo and Emma, who live in a bay town next to the ocean. They meet Rikki after a boy incident and suddenly find themselves stranded on Mako Island. They land their escape, but soon discover that a full moon blessed (or cursed???) them with mermaid tails and water-bending powers. The girls live out the dream of being a real mermaid, but show the consequences of not being able to casually touch water again.
Not a single thing has changed in the 3-season series, from the cringy flirting to the bad acting and abrupt transitions. Memes are circulating on apps like Tik Tok, Twitter, and Instagram, in which creators imitate the girls' Aussie accents. It's quite a nostalgic laugh, if I do say so myself.
Despite the show being a throwback to worse video editing and fashion fads, it's quite appropriate that it should resurface on streaming apps. H2O has snippets of environmental conservation and eco-friendly awareness. For example, there are a few episodes already in the first season where Cleo is at odds with her dad's fishing crew for illegally hunting sea turtles with harmful, unregulated nets. Cleo saves the turtles the boat catches, much like our Twitter-verse is urging the world to keep trash out of our oceans. It re-instills the beauty of the world around us as the girls gain more appreciation through their mermaid capabilities.
I can't say I'm mad the series is available on Netflix. It's nostalgic and wholesome. It's like having a Barbie movie night or something. And can we forget about Aquamarine? Both of those MADE mermaids happen for little girls. So huge thank you to Netflix. Signed, the little girl in me
