Most 18 year olds cannot say that they love their job. Most 18 year olds can't even say that they like their job. McDonnalds, Burger King, Subway, clothing stores are all very typical jobs for juniors and seniors in high school. I actually found my job while eating Subway. I work at The Little Gym. No, we do not have treadmills and baby dumbbells. We are a non-competitive developmental gymnastic program for kids ages four months to 12 years. These are just a few of the many reasons why I love my job.
1) Small children say the funniest things.
The best thing about children is that you have absolutely no idea what they are going to say at any given time. Kids, especially three-year-olds have zero filter and will tell you everything that is happening in their lives. Sometimes, you even get a good unicorn story.
2) With kids chasing you, you can run for five minutes, do about 7,000 jumping jacks and feel no pain.
I have never considered myself an endurance athlete. I'm a ballet dancer and never did I think I had the stamina to run, jump, flip, yell, and sing for an hour and 15 minutes but kids have this strange super power...they never get tired. So neither can you. These kids bring out the best of my athletic ability. They challenge me every single class to do more, go longer, and run faster.
3) Encouraging exercise in young children is an amazing and rewarding job.
I love seeing the look on a child's face when they finally achieve a skill they have been working on. Normally, they are extremely surprised because they had no idea they were even capable of achieving their goal. Then the huge smile starts spreading from ear to ear. I love working with the same kids week after week seeing them improve and grow and learn. Kids run into the gym so excited and ready to get going. Parents tell me that their children did not stop talking about the gym all week.
I love my job 100 percent. I look forward to it every single week. I feel sad when the kids leave the gym and hope they come back someday. I want each and every one of them to succeed in everything they do.
