Dear Best Friend,

When we first met, I knew there was something special about you. You were quiet and somewhat hard to figure out, but your genuine smile and laugh made me feel at home. Talking to you made me forget any pain inside. For once, I felt special, and that was an experience that I will never forget. To this day, you make me the happiest person in the world. You’re my best friend. You’re my rock.

I have very clear memories of us watching TV and me eating all of your Oreos. They were so good, I just couldn’t help myself. I remember how you’d look without your glasses. How could I forget those gorgeous hazel eyes? Someday, you’re going to make a girl very happy, and she will fall in love with everything about you.

I appreciate all of our late talks whenever I’m feeling sad or lonely. I know I’m a handful, but you somehow manage to deal with me. Even when I’m impossible. We have been through a lot, but we always come out stronger. You may not realize this, but without you, I would be lost. People like you don’t come along very often, and I believe that we crossed paths for a reason.

Whenever I laugh, I want to be laughing with you. And most of the time, when I smile, it’s because of you. Sometimes I wonder if you fully understand just how important you are to me. I know I should tell you more often, and I want you to know how grateful I am for you. I’ll stand by you, and I know that you’ll do the same for me.

I’ll always appreciate the silly pictures you send me and all the jokes you tell. And I’ll always appreciate all the good memories I have with you. Remember when you let me borrow your favorite hoodie? Actually, borrow isn’t the word because it’s still hanging in my closet. But hey, when I wear it, I think of you, and those are some pretty great thoughts. There were days where I would lay on your bed eating fruit snacks while you played your guitar. While lying there, I would just admire everything about you. You don’t even know how special you really are. Almost two years since the day we met, and just take a look at how far we have come.

You know me better than anyone else does. You have seen every single side of me, and you’ve never left me abandoned or unloved. There were times where our friendship was on the rocks, and I was crushed. The thought of ever losing you is terrifying, and I don’t even know what I would do. I love you and who you are as a person, and nothing in this world will ever change that. We have made a lot of great memories, and I can’t wait to see what is ahead.

You’re the one who will always pick me up when I’m down. And I knew from day one that you were going to be the person to change my life. Always remember that.

It was you. It will always be you.

Forever and always,

Your best friend

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
