In case you have not heard, the Ohio senate passed bill HB 48 on Wednesday, December 8. This bill allows people who have their concealed carry permit to carry guns "into certain gun-free zones." Let me start out with this first: I have NO problems with guns. I plan on getting my permit as soon as I turn 21. However, the places that guns can now be allowed to be carried onto are not appropriate. Granted, the bill does not allow people to actually to have the gun on their person. It was stated in NBC4i Columbus's article that the bill allows people to leave their guns in their cars - something which was not previously allowed. These places include colleges, universities, daycares and police stations, all of which were gun-free zones until this law was passed.
There are pros and cons to this bill being passed. On one hand, if a situation breaks out that police cannot respond quickly enough to before a number of things happen, and someone had a gun, the situation could turn out a lot better. On the flip-side of the spectrum, if someone keeps a gun in their car, it could get broken into, and someone could steal that gun. I know that the possibility of that could be one in a million, but what if it turns out to be less than that?
In my opinion, the only people that should be allotted to have guns at those places are police officers. People whose jobs it is to keep people safe. A situation can turn from good to bad quickly, depending on what it is, and police can help it. University Police Officers carry guns on campus, and that is the way it should stay.
