We’ve all thought at one time or another, “I just want to go home.” But when we’re hundreds of miles from home, how can we stop that dreaded feeling? The Odyssey at SUNY Oneonta devised some simple tricks to keep you happy and excited in your new home.
1. Have a quick goodbye.
The longer your parents hang around, crying on move-in day, the less time you have to meet all your new potential friends at college! Establishing solid relationships is key to an enjoyable college experience. Just give mom and dad a quick hug and kiss goodbye, and start hanging with all the new people in your dorm.

2. Bring a little piece of home with you.
Hang pictures and bring something that reminds you of home, like a stuffed animal, a piece of jewelry, or some nice wall decor. Seeing friends and family is a nice reminder that you’re not leaving, you’re going to be back soon.
3. Get involved on campus.
You’d be amazed how many like-minded people you’ll find at club fairs and campus activities. These people may very well become your lifelong friends. Get outside your room and go explore your interests. Join student government, a club that fits your major, or some fun volunteer organizations, like sororities and fraternities.
4. Find friends from your hometown.
Familiar faces can be comforting in a new environment, but don’t fall into the trap of only hanging with them. Branch out and meet new people, and when you need a little piece of home, go grab lunch with your neighborhood pal and talk about everything you miss.
