And why I'm proud of it

A Guide To Being A Netflix Loser

People have hobbies. Some like riding their bike, or taking a stroll through the park, or playing tennis, swimming, working out… doing anything that in their opinion is “productive.” But when did we decide that the only types of hobbies a person can have, involve staying active? Having a hobby doesn’t require you to get off your feet and do something that requires exercise. In fact, a hobby can be as simple as laying in bed and staring at a wall. Orrrrr, a hobby can be something that requires no moving, BUT can also include laying in bed.

Netflix.

I’m one of those girls in their teens that is a Netflix junkie. I’ve got almost all of those romance/drama shows under my belt. From One Tree Hill, to Glee, to Gossip Girl… I’ve seen them all. And let me tell you, they damn well are hobbies.

It’s not just the act of watching the Netflix episode, but instead it’s the act of fully indulging yourself into the drama of it. Understanding why Brooke and Lucas didn’t work out, or why Blair and Chuck emotionally just COULD NOT be together, is my version of watching Netflix. Okay, so maybe I am an extremely dramatic 19-year-old girl, but without these TV shows, I really don’t know what I’d do with any of my free time. Sure sitting in my basement with my eyes glued to Nathan and Haley celebrating their first born all day isn’t necessarily the MOST productive thing I could be doing, but at the end of the day, it’s pretty damn productive to me.

Netflix brings me happiness. Maybe my hobbies don’t include playing basketball or running on the treadmill, but what they do for me is something else. They expand my imagination, broaden my creativity, give me something to be excited about. Being able to discuss Netflix shows with another person is one of the most important characteristics to have these days. How many people do we see post on a find a roommate page on Facebook about their favorite Netflix show? Come on. It’s inevitable.

So maybe coming home from school every day to turn on 90210 on Netflix isn’t necessarily always the BEST idea, but if what you’re looking for is finding something to look forward to all day long, I can guarantee that Netflix is the thing. I can’t even count the amount of times I’d be having a busy or chaotic day and couldn’t wait to come home, lay in bed and watch Friday Night Lights on my laptop.

Netflix truly is an amazing thing and for those of you who think I may be chaotic for writing this (to be honest, I kind of am), I bet you that you can agree that Netflix is an amazing thing. And what is better than being able to watch all of your favorite TV shows and movies right at your very own fingertips!?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
