A Guide To Scoring Your Dream Job Or Internship

Even though summer may seem like a lifetime away, for those graduating this spring or are underclassmen looking for an internship to gain more experience in the hypothetical off-season, now is the time to start searching for those positions. Many employers begin their recruiting seasons in late February through March for their entry-level or internship spots, and if you would like to be one of them, time is of the essence! Here are some tips to help you score the position you are hoping for!

1. Visit your Office of Career Services.

Stonehill, among other colleges, has a great career services department to help students get ready for their internships, post-graduation service, entry-level positions or even graduate school applications. Make sure to visit them and get your resume and cover letter looked at or brush up on some interviewing skills!

2. Check out Indeed, LinkedIn's job tab or Handshake for position listings.

Whether you are looking for jobs or internships, these are great resources to use. There are plenty of postings and you can filter it by position, keywords and the city you wish to work in on each of them. Plus it gives you the opportunity to search around for things that are most interesting to you!

3. Get on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn can be the most useful tool a person can utilize during any internship or job search. Put together an impressive page with your highlights and endorsed skills so that employers see a well-rounded candidate. Even being active on the site, including endorsing others or liking updates your connections may have, is an opportunity to have your name out there.

4. Spruce up your wardrobe.

Getting some new business or business casual attire for your wardrobe is an important step in landing that job or internship. Making sure that your suit fits well before interviews is a small but very important step in presenting yourself as the best candidate possible for a position.

5. Relax!

It can be very difficult to follow this simple step, but is crucial to making the job and internship search a lot easier. Knowing that things are going to fall into place the way they should in the end is of the utmost importance. Relax, apply to those jobs and keep yourself positive!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
