When you join a sorority one of the most important parts is documenting the adventure for recruitment, throwbacks and nostalgia. However, there is no real guide to tell you what poses are possible and can show just how amazing this life is—or at least I never saw it. So whether you have no idea what to do or would just like some ideas before the next event, here is a guide to the top poses every girl needs to know to show just how awesome the bond with sisters is. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?
Throw What You Know
For recruitment and just overall srat purposes, it is imperative to take a Throw What You Know picture. Whether you are throwing your sign at the beach, a mountaintop, or just at your House with your sisters this picture is always good for representing. First you must be taught your hand sign (and try to make sure if it looks the least bit complicated you ask an older girl, one wrong finger placement and you could be making a nazi symbol.) One you've got your hand sign down, facing away from the camera you throw it up in the air. If more sisters are present you cross your arms and each does half the sign and connect it. (Bonus points if the girls on the end use their leftover arm to hug the sister next to them.) This picture will always be an awesome cover photo when you need it and will show that no matter where you travel, home is always with you.
The Sorority Squat
This is by far one of the most basic and timeless poses of a sorority girl. It is a tried and true method for getting a lot of girls all in an Instagram sized picture with nobody being covered or left out. However, just because it is the most basic it is certainly not the easiest, calves of steel are needed for the ten minutes you will be in this position. While anyone can just squat down in a photo it is a whole other ballgame for a sorority squat. To achieve this perfection you must remember to keep your knees together, hands on knees or thigh, feet slightly apart, and butt out. This ensures perfect posture in the group shot making it worthy to use as a cover photo until your next event.
The Candid
The Candid shot can be done in two ways and can become some of your favorite pictures either way. The first is the planned candid, everyone has their hair in place, the spacing for the picture is just right, and the laughter is faked so you can make sure you look good. We are all guilty of taking these and adding comments about how much we make each other laugh. The second is the real candid, this usually happens because your photographer has decided to take up what little memory you have in your phone by clicking a photo every five seconds. The quirky (weird) faces and real laughs you get here are priceless and will win a piece of your heart even if it isn't really centered or your hair is going the completely wrong way. Whether you plan it or just let it happen the candid is always a favorite and will remind you of the fun times you've had for years to come.
The Power Point
This pose is a favorite among most sorority girls and will almost always be done whenever pictures are being taken. As the name implies you point at the camera (making sure the focus is on your unblocked faces, not your hands.) Then you make a serious face and pretend you are some form of a thug and not a hundred-pound girl in a tutu with glitter paint on her face. The great thing about the power point is that it can be used with most other photo types and is commonly what is done for the "fun one" your Marketing Chair wants for the website to show how fun and different you are.
Big Little Pose
In your sorority life, this will be one of the most important poses you know, just like your Big will always be one of the most important people you know. To do this pose correctly the Little will sit or squat tilted slightly to one side, next her Big will squat or lean on her tilted to the other side, and then GBig will stand behind tilted the other way, and so on and so forth until the family is extended. A tip is for hands to be placed on any little(s) backs to make following the family tree easy. This pose is crucial for all reveals and initiations your fam goes through to show how strong the bond is not only in your sorority as a whole, but together. Also, try to remember that while you could do this pose with a mother it is not a pose intended for just you and some friends.
Circle of Sisterly Love
If you want to show how loving and down to earth you are with your sisters, this is the pose for you. It takes the overall adorableness from a candid and brings in the free feeling of nature. For this, you all lay in a circle (three to six girls preferred) while holding hands and smile at each other. You all must, however, decide to look to the left or right to keep a consistent cute effect on the picture. The only downfall to this picture is your photographer really needs to make sure everyone's hair looks good on the ground and that you get all the grass or leaves out of your hair for your next round of pictures.
Hug Shot
A staple in the sorority girls bag of tricks this pose can be done with two or twenty girls. The hug shot is imperative to show how cute your friendship is and the forty-five-degree angle makes everyone look like perfection. To start, you must hug each other while keeping with the forty-five-degree angle rule, lean back slightly, and keep knees bent slightly. Then you must all decide on a cute smile to the camera or if you are going to look at each other like you haven't seen each other in years and feel so much love. Another way to step up your game on this photo type is to have all hug styles the same: clasped around each other's waist or delicately on each others arms are two good ways to go about this picture.
