On May 26, one of the greatest stars in the hip hop culture was finally released from jail. Gucci Mane, also known as "Guwop," La Flare and King of Hip Hop, was not supposed to get out of jail for another four months. Once stumbling upon something on Instagram saying, Gucci Mane was free, I had to do my research. In a matter of 20 minutes, the Internet was going crazy.
Mane was arrested on a gun charge back in September 2013. He was facing two different gun charges that year between Sept. 12 to Sept. 14 and could have been facing up to 20 years in jail. On May 13, 2014, he pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The news of his release surfaced the web when his girlfriend, Kairo, posted on her Snapchat that her baby was home. She had a video of her holding his hands and giving him kisses but no one knew if it was truly Mane. Once he opened his mouth and started talking, all the happiness and joy in everyone's moods went up.
"#FreeGucci" has been on social media for about three years now. Different types of rappers have used references of Gucci Mane in their songs. For example, rapper and friend of Mane, Young Thug, has a song called "#FreeGucci." He has been like a father figure in hip hop, discovering some of the greatest artists that are out now. Nicki Minaj and her boyfriend, at the time, Safaree Samuels, Young Jeezy and Waka Flocka Flame, went to him for guidance. He was known for putting Atlanta on the map for hip-hop and paved the way for artists coming out of Atlanta to have a voice.
The "#FreeGucci" hashtag still lives on, but now it's "#GucciFree." It's been a week-and-a-half since he's been out and all he is focused on is his money and music. The first day he got out, he dropped a song called, "First Day Out Da Feds," basically talking about how life is for him upon being released. He was spotted with superstar producers, Mike-Wil-Made-It and Zaytoven. His release was definitely unpredictable but it was also one day no one will forget.
XOXO,
