To me, it seems like Gucci belts came out of nowhere, as I don't remember seeing an Ad for them. This could also be because I'm really not that cool, nor am I a trendsetter. One day I woke up and everyone was walking around flaunting my initials(GG). For something that seemingly every basic b*tch has, this ish is expensiveeeee (to the tune of 450 bucks). I saw them and was, like, "Oh cool, I'll get one too."
Then I realized I actually wanted to keep all my organs.
I'd say this trend has been building since around September 2018 and I've been questioning if it would stick around. Here we are in February and in my eyes, it's more prevalent than ever. Where did this fascination come from? In my research, I found that the belt was found to be the most popular item in fashion in 2018. How did this mystical accessory become the must-have of every girl gang heading out on the town? InStyle Magazine attributed the Gucci belt's success to its backing by celebrities.
However, I ask, why this celebrity backing? Celebrities back things all the time, yet they don't become nearly as popular. Business Insider appointed the surge in popularity to the revival of 90s style, specifically the logo craze. This revival proves that trends really do resurface. There are two things about this that make me happy. One, my hoarding of old stuff is totally justified and two, there is a great chance of me being able to whip out my Silly Bandz and rock those again.
The door could easily be reopened for the gel body glitter that got your arm hair feeling some type of way. Let's be honest, we spend so much time trying to block out the haters when really, bringing back the plastic shutter glasses are the most effective way to do this. I'm starting to think I should resell all these things and ideally make more money than Gucci(but if you read this and steal my ideas, we are going to have a serious conversation via ask.fm since everything old is cool now).
Additionally, the aesthetic for Instagram is also mentioned as a cause of popularity which is something to consider. Are we running down our bank accounts so we can ~do it for the gram~? This point is so valid because everyone knows that these belts are expensive and the logo is easily recognizable when rapidly scrolling through a feed. I am curious to see the shelf life on the popularity of these belts.
I think it is important to acknowledge that if one is to make an expensive purchase, this could be seen as a good investment. This belt is versatile and can complete an otherwise boring outfit. I definitely support this purchase more than I would spending $450 on one shirt, but less than using that money to buy a plane ticket somewhere cool. Yet, some of the girls I see wearing these belts are also the girls whose cards are getting declined at the bar, so I don't really know what kind of conclusion I'm coming to here.
I chose to cover this controversial topic because out of all the current events I could cover, I thought this had the most impact (obviously not lol). Really, I wanted to discover how this belt became so popular in case anyone like me was wondering. I'd like to close with if you don't envision this belt sparking joy for you in maybe five to ten years, perhaps save your money for a different purchase. Unless you're rich! Then rock that belt, honey! Hey, what do I know? If you aren't really digging the belt, don't get it just cause you feel like you should, you're cool just the way you are.
Fashion is about expression and if you feel that wearing my initials makes you happy, who am I to stop you?
