Everyone has their favorite type of genre of movie that they prefer to watch over others. Some prefer romances and dramas while others may prefer comedy and thrillers. Then, you have those who would rather watch a super hero movie over anything else. The way I see it is that one can like multiple different movies genres, but when it comes to superhero films you're either all in or all out. With this being said though, my perspective has changed after seeing "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.", and no, I didn't see the first one. After seeing this film I realized that not all super hero films are the same. Some have the ability to draw you in more than others.
I enjoyed this film not because I'm suddenly a major super hero fan, but it presents the core themes of family and friendship. It's very relatable to the audience. For one, all of the Guardians have very diverse personalities which contributes to the fact that they don't get along at times and have trouble seeing eye to eye which is one of the most common aspects of most families. Even with all the diversity and arguments, the Guardians always stand by one another and would rather die trying to save one of their own than try and save themselves and leave a man behind. This is where the director plays with the audience's emotions when he has Yondu risk his life and die in order to save Peter and keep the family all together. Yondu shows everyone what it means to sacrifice yourself for something greater.
Even though this film doesn't focus much on romantic relationships, you can still see that there is a connection between Peter and Gamora. Their friendship has grown into something more, and even though Gamora denies it we can all see it. This is relatable to the audience because many of us in the world have gone through a point in our lives or have witnessed that two people are interested in one another, but only one of them can get themselves to admit the obvious and their true feelings. This is present when Peter finally admits to the romantic connection that he feels between himself and Gamora, and by instinct she denies it. It's not until the end that Gamora finally realizes and portrays through her actions that she does in fact care deeply for Peter as more than just a friend or as a brother figure.
As you can see, "Guardians of the Galaxy" may be just another super hero film, but it's also something that's relatable to the audience on many different levels. Sure, everyone may not be into the whole special powers or saving the galaxy thing, but this movie is much more than that. It's a story that connects family and friendship all into one. I was skeptical at first, but after watching I would definitely recommend this film to anyone.
