A Year Of Growth

The first step to achieving your dreams.

A Year Of Growth

Being that this is my first week writing for Odyssey, I was a bit confused on where to start and what my first article should entail. My journey of sharing weekly entries for my family, friends and followers is my first step in pursuing my dreams of becoming a journalist. What would be my first topic?

Well, after scrolling through social media and seeing the variety of prom pictures, graduation pictures and many celebrations, I suddenly had a flashback to the same time last year.

It was a time of tears, change and uncertainty. Everyone around was moving in different directions and our daily routines for the past 13 years were quickly coming to a crumble.

What was more frightening, moving away, meeting new friends, living on our own and/or simply starting this new journey? This was such a big step that the title "college freshman" deserves recognition. Whether my fellow graduates continued onto university life, the workforce or the military, these changes occurring were going to be life affecting forever.

Freshman year of college, for sure, is a year of growth; and through growing, I’ve found that one learns many things that shape them into the successful people they are about to become or grow into being. Gaining responsibility, being organized, staying strong, showing gratitude and being humble are integral keys to success for incoming college freshmen. Below are some tips to remember.

G:Gain

We gained the confidence, used our intelligence in our classes and gained a lot of freedom. Each day you go to a class, work or to a club or sport, you will learn something that will better your future. Gain friendships and don’t be afraid to work in groups or teams. Always believe in yourself, keep working hard and do what you have to do to follow your dreams and grow professionally.

R:Responsibility

Adjusting to new wake up times, living on your own, cleaning up after yourself or simply doing your own laundry are all scenarios that can help one become responsible and independent. Your parents will be surprised when you return home how efficient you have become.

O:Organized

In high school, you were mainly with the same peers, bound by the same graduation requirements and had the same teachers. It was a time where the homework assignments were just a text away. As time went on, we learned how to utilize time-management skills and quickly became organized in keeping on top of our work, projects or assignments.

W:Weak

At many times during this adjustment period, you may feel weak or sometimes even hopeless. Your roommates can be your support system and the comfort of speaking or FaceTiming with those who love you can always put you at ease. Use your colleges support services like counselors and, of course, don’t forget to go the infirmary if you are feeling sick. No matter what, keep working hard through challenges, and you will gain the strength you will need to overcome obstacles.

T:Thankful

Be grateful! This past year was a learning experience for all and personally I’ve become thankful for many different people along the way. I’ve heard through experience throughout one’s life that people will push you and challenge you. Over your first year out of high school, many people will change; some may leave you, and even move on. Always remember, it is very important to stay true to who you are, what you believe in and to be appreciative of the relationships that never left your side.

H: Humble

As time goes on, some people may quickly become very successful while others' success may be right around the corner. No matter what career choice or path one follows, it is important to stay grounded and be humble. Always remember those who were there for you and those you can trust. Feel fortunate, but always be caring about others and keep your commitments. Pursue excellence while following your dreams, but always be someone people can admire and trust!

My biggest tip is to have great hopes for yourself. It really does take one year to grow, gain experience, increase confidence, create new relationships and develop independence coupling all with traits that will foster success in your futures.

Commencement from your high schools may seem final and very sad; but get excited, it is a new beginning, a time of hope and an opportunity for academic and personal

growth - the first step to achieving your dreams.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
