34 Things Only The Youngest Of A Big Family Can Understand
Merry Austin

Growing up as the youngest child in a huge family can be both a blessing and a curse - it was a blessing for you.... but for everyone else in the family, you were the curse. Though it was never easy to be the youngest, you absolutely wouldn't trade that for having a terrible job such as the oldest or, even worse, the middle child. With 9 siblings ahead of me to pave the road, life was good and I would have to say I was one of the luckiest kids in the world to grow up as the baby. Here is a list of things that only the youngest—and greatest—child of a big family can relate to.

1. You never had to worry about being ignored. (Sorry, middle child.)

There was absolutely no way your family could ever ignore you. Partly because you were so awesome and partly because you screamed loud enough to ensure you got all the attention.

2. Every bedroom in your home had a bunkbed and they were great.

And you never fell asleep on time because you and your siblings were too busy making forts out of said bunk beds and sheets.

3. Speaking of moms, you have no idea how your mom survived without multiple mental breakdowns.

Somedays I can barely handle going to class or walking to the dining hall to get my already prepared meal... How in the world did you survive, Mom?

4. Your siblings loved showcasing their big kid privileges in front of your face.

I'm still bitter about that time y'all claimed to be "reading" but were, in fact, hiding bowls of ice cream behind your books.

5. Your brothers were your heroes and biggest enemies at the same time.

I think these pictures basically sum up any Big Brother/Little Sister relationship.

6. Whether they wanted you to or not, you usually ended up hanging with your older siblings and their friends...

...and you were probably the only one who was happy about it.

7. When it came to video games and your brothers, you could watch, silently, for about an hour before they kicked you out.

All you wanted to do was hang out with your big brothers! And ask a bunch of questions. And then cry when they kick you out.

8. You were, undoubtedly, in at least one wedding as a young child. You also probably ruined said wedding.

I was a great flower girl! My aunt's wedding video shows me standing on the altar making ugly faces through the entire ceremony. (My brothers started it, I swear.)

9. You were blessed from a young age to have many amazing role models.

(But you'll still never admit to them how much you look up to them.)

10. You were also blessed to learn from their mistakes.

Thank you, big sisters, for teaching me: 1. eyebrow plucking is important and 2. don't ride down the driveway on a bike (because you will break an arm).

11. They also taught you a few (not so) valuable life lessons.

You don't want to know how I found out what ABC gum is...

12. Whatever your siblings were involved in—you suddenly found yourself also involved.

Big sis wants to try ballet? Okay. Big sis wants to quit ballet before the really cool recital? Looks like you don't get to wear that cute watermelon costume. :(

13. You don't know what it's like to be alone.

You always had an entourage, because you're awesome. So, things became really tough when you were the last one at home.

14. You were forgotten at a practice/school event/etc at least once.

Hey, Dad, remember that one time you forgot to pick me up from volleyball practice and my coach had to call you multiple times to come get your child? I do....

15. Your older siblings smothered you with attention.

And they still do to this day.

16. They also tortured you with attention.

My siblings had a raccoon toy that they used to chase me with. It still appears in my nightmares sometimes.

17. Even though you were the youngest by a few years, your mom always matched you with the next youngest.

I think my mom was too tired to realize we weren't the same age. Or maybe she was just over it at this point. I could understand either way.

18. Old pictures are just a jumble of kids.

There was no such thing as a "good picture."

19. You were absolutely spoiled (and loved it).

Forever a daddy's girl.

20. There was no such thing as "quiet time" while growing up.

What are my brothers doing? Why does my sister have marker on her face? Why was I such an adorable baby? We'll never know...

21. Not only did you automatically have tons of friends to play with, but things always got rowdy.

It's better if you don't ask what's going on. (It's sumo wrestling.)

22. You got dragged to more sports games than you can count or remember.

You were your siblings' number one fan! And you also had no idea what was going on! Go, team!

23. You also got dragged along on every errand, ever.

You spent most of your childhood riding around in the car with your parents, but you can't complain because those are some of your favorite memories.

24. You copied (basically) everything your siblings did.

This was clearly before I realized I was cooler than all of them anyway.

25. You got away with a lot more than your older, and a little bitter, siblings did.

All you have to do is look at your dad with your best puppy dog eyes and he'll totally forget that you just came home with a tattoo!

26. Your teachers know you by your older siblings' pranks.

Thank you, everyone, for being troublemakers. My grades appreciate it.

27. Everyone always asks you what your older, more successful, siblings are doing.

Yes, they are all doing great. Yes, they are all successful. No, I have no idea what day it is or when I did laundry last.

28. As the youngest, you get access to all the cuteness of kids without actually having one.

Shoutout to those bomb nieces and nephews you get to corrupt! Hey, guys!!!

29. There will always be at least one missing in pictures.

Or in this case, six of them are missing.

30. You've never been teased by so many people at once.

One time my oldest siblings were babysitting and made us race up and down a giant hill for a single Cheeto. A. Single. Cheeto.

31. Your closet was full of everything your big sibs didn't want anymore (or things they still wanted but you "borrowed.")

You always had the stylish wardrobe... of a few years ago.

32. Being the youngest of a large family means your parents are on the older side, which also means you have to teach them how to work their smartphone.

My dad's first Snapchat only went to me, but it should have gone to the whole world.

33. Life got weird when you were the only kid left at home.

Like seriously mom and dad, don't you have anything else to do besides talk to me? What is with all this extra attention?

34. No matter how crazy or annoying your siblings get, you wouldn't trade them for anything.

I guess you guys are pretty great.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Sister | Brother Style - Word Press

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
