Growing Up In The Mid-2000s

Almost everyone aged 17 to 24 can relate.

Growing Up In The Mid-2000s
Today

Lately, the trend seems to be “being a 90’s kid.” Though we may have been born in the late 1990’s, we spent our childhood in the mid 2000’s, and there’s nothing wrong with that. You could only beg your mom to buy you so many lip gloss flavors from Libby Lu and you had so many Build-A-Bear birthday parties to attend. Here are other things kids who grew up in the 90s experienced.

  1. Your bedroom was once covered in posters of Raven Symone, Hilary Duff, Zac Efron, Drake Bell, and many more.
  2. You call it the PRNDL.
  3. You knew all the words to "Potential Breakup Song", and you still do.
  4. You kissed a poster of Jesse McCartney before you went to bed every night. Don’t even try to deny this one. We all did it.
  5. You ran home after school every day to watch Phil of the Future or Lizzie McGuire.
  6. You had all of the NOW CDs and they were pretty much the only thing you listened to.
  7. Performing the “Bone Dance” from Hannah Montana with your friends on the playground before class began.
  8. You spent your time on your colossal 90’s computer on websites such as Club Penguin, Runescape, or Stardoll.
  9. You thought you’d look like one of the Pussycat Dolls when you grew up.
  10. You begged for one of those all sequin purses that everyone owned. (I never got one, but I recently bought one from a garage sale and I strongly refer to it as one of my best purchases.)
  11. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was either Happy Bunny or Bobby Jack.
  12. You were "Burnin’ Up" for the Jonas Brothers.
  13. You didn’t need the karaoke version of High School Musical, you already knew all the words. And the dance moves. And the trivia. And all of the dialogue.
  14. Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya Dela Rosa Ramirez.
  15. Emotional scream-singing to every JoJo song, even though you were ten years old and couldn’t relate.
  16. You thought YouTube sensation Fred was the funniest character in the world.
  17. Avril Lavigne was your role model. "Sk8er Boi" and "Girlfriend" were your anthems. You wanted the pink streaks in your hair and the chipped black nail polish.
  18. Your slumber parties consisted of A Cinderella Story or Sleepover.
  19. You secretly listened to "Sexy Back" by Justin Timberlake or "Grillz" by Nelly on the colossal computer.
  20. You remember premieres of original Disney movies such as High School Musical and Wendy Wu - Homecoming Warrior.

I enjoyed growing up in this era and I have decided to reminisce. I hope I was able to bring back some lovely memories of 2006, and I hope you shoot a message to your neighborhood friends about a ten year reunion.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
