Five Quirks Learned from Growing Up Around Guys

Among three brothers and multiple cousins to whom were mostly guys, I learned the rules of being the only girl very quickly. Growing up in a house full of boys can sound rather off putting to any girl who has no experience around a bunch of boys. However, growing up in this environment has taught me many lessons.

Never underestimate their cleverness.

Specifically, one of my brothers has always had a knack for building things. Most of his time was spent in the garage and I never really cared to look into what he was doing. There is where I went very, very wrong. Multiple times he led me to believe that he was simply working on a small project that could be seen as non-dangerous. However, after closer examination, I found that these ”projects” were usually comprised of extremely dangerous and sometimes scary components.

Never take for granted the younger years.

Being the second oldest, I was larger than my two younger brothers for a solid fourteen years. However, after finding myself actually losing a wrestling match one day, I realized I was no longer able to pin my brothers down. This can be alarming because of the built up frustration that they never could take out on you during those years you were so much bigger than them.

Understand that they are not a girl.

Trying to make them play dress up never works and I'd pay money to see my brothers play with anything pink. Trying to grasp that they will never understand why you wear makeup or like to go shopping is tough. Family pictures are always difficult because the guys don't see the importance. However, the girls know that pictures are memories and will be looked at for years to come. This is frustrating to say the least but eventually after saying "one more" five more times, the guys finally smile just to get it over with.

Be ready for the sassy teenage years.

Oh yes. Boys have ten times the sass of a girl. My brothers are particularly good at talking under their breath. However, I can say that they could have learned the sass from their older sister... Fights over chores and who is the better wrestler seem to always turn out a win for the boys. You just can't compete with that boy sass.

Finally, realize that they love you unconditionally.

Unlike girls, boys don't care about your hair, makeup, or accessories. All they care about is if you're good to them and if you're good in the kitchen. My brothers, no matter how many fights, at the end of the day will still tell me they love me. One brother in particular would hug me three times a day if I let him.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
