About a month ago I received a not so stellar haircut from Paul Mitchell (friendly people, but be wary when you get your hair cut there since they are still all students and are learning the basics and they cut hair using geometric shapes).
Honestly, it has been driving me a little insane in the membrane. But I am going to chalk it up to a learning experience and write about it! So this week instead of complaining about it, let's look at some tips that will help us grow our hair out together. LET'S GET IT!
1. Use conditioner every time you shampoo
Every time you shampoo your hair, as it cleans it strips your hair of moisture. That is why every time you shampoo you must conditioner in order to replenish the moisturize in your hair. As the hair shaft thins at the bottom of the hair due to chemicals and heat, it extra important to moisturize your hair and that starts in the shower.
2. Don't shampoo every time you shower
This is going back the moisture aspect of hair. Washing your hair every day strips the natural oils from it. Give your hair a chance to retain some of its natural oils but figuring out how long you can go without shampooing your hair. It is different for every hair type!
3. Do a cold water rinse at the end of each shower
This little trick can go a long way with growing out your hair. Cold water lays the outer layer of your hair down better which will prevent tangles and moisture loss.
4. Apply oil treatment weekly
You can use oils such as coconut, macadamia, or jojoba oils or a combination! Do a pre-wash oil treatment by putting the oils on your hair for about 10 minutes in the shower, after 10 minutes wash out of your hair and shampoo and condition like normal! The oils build up fatty acids on the hair follicles and doing your normal hair routine seals them in.
5. Take hair boosting supplements
Adding vitamins to your diet is obviously not going to make your hair grow inches overnight! But vitamins like biotin certainly do promote hair growth.
6. Brush hair from bottom up
WATCH YOURSELF when it comes to brushing your hair. It can be very damaging to your hair if done improperly. I never actually realized that brushing your hair this way will get rid of your tangles and still keep you from losing too much hair from brushing it.
7. DON'T WRAP HAIR IN A TOWEL
This was a habit I did for as long as I could remember! I would literally sit with my towel on my head for at least two hours after I got out of the shower. Apparently, your hair gets caught in the fibers in the towel and causes breakage. That is a no go shmoo.
8. Ditch the ponytail
Another breakage bandit! Instead of the elastic, try clips, scrunchie or a cloth type of ponytail. Something that is more gentle to your hair.
9. Lay off the heat
Laying off products and tools that cause a lot of damage to your hair will make your hair healthier which will encourage it to grow.
10. Get a trim
The scissors can be your friend. Getting trims gets rid split of those pesky split ends and promotes hair growth. Most stylists say if you are trying to grow your hair out getting a trim about every 2-3 months is key.
11. Be patient
I know I may be wasting my fingers as I am typing this but I have to constantly tell myself as I am trying to grow my hair is to be patient. I literally have the patience of a small infant so I understand 100 % that is easier said than done. It can't grow overnight but taking these steps will help to promote healthy hair growth!
Hope these help y'all as much they are helping me! I feel like after all these years of not knowing how to take care of hair I finally have some sort of idea how to! Bless!
