Growing Up In The Stands

Third time's the charm.

I remember my first Indians game like it was yesterday. The intimidation walking up the then Jacobs Field, the crowds of people and how I clenched onto my dad's hand for dear life walking up the steps to get to our nose bleed seats where you could see everything in the ballpark. I could feel the excitement and see the smiles on the fans in the crowd anxious for the game to start. It was a day like no other. Being seven years old, you know who the sports teams are, but it's different when you see them. It's different when you actually start to engage on what's going on in the game. That's the day where I learned what being a Cleveland sports fan is. It was from that point where I would listen intently to the games on the radio and watch the games closely on TV.

And that was only the beginning; anyone who lives or supports Cleveland knows that being a Cleveland sports fan is hard at times. Whether it’s the sports team or just the typical unpredictable Cleveland weather. We know always be prepared for the worst but expect the best. For more than 115 years, Cleveland sports fans have been showing their support tremendously. John Adams is a great example of someone who never leaves when times get rough. He has been hitting that drum for 40 years attending 3,211 games and only missing 38. To me, that is pure dedication and understanding of someone with commitment.

Going to baseball games truly brings out everyone with a different type of background. It’s not just subjected to a certain kind of person with a specific age. Baseball is a game for everyone! The Indians do a beautiful job of portraying that with a such a diverse community Cleveland has and shares and we are not afraid to show the world how great our baseball team truly is.

Ever since my first baseball game I have been cheering and supporting ever since. It made sense to me. I understood the game and knew what its objection was. Growing up I would go to any game I had the chance too. Friends, family, neighbors, no matter where you were whenever there was an Indians game people would be talking about it or wearing team gear. It was the regular to see someone sporting Indian merchandise.

The start of 2016 for the Cleveland Indians has been phenomenal. The Indians held a solid 14 game winning streak. It was during that time where everyone thought we had a chance of going to the World Series this year. The last time the Indians won the World Series it was 1946. But back in the '90s we had two more chances of winning that world series.

In 1995, The Indians were 100-45 and playing in the world series for the first time. We were at the home of the Atlanta Braves with over two million people watching in excitement and fear. It's the bottom of the ninth and the Atlanta Braves are up 1 to nothing. Mark Wohlers is pitching for the Braves and, sadly, the braves ended up taking it 1-0.

But the Indians had another shot. This time, the Cleveland Indians would face the Miami Marlin's in the 1997 World Series. The Indians were first in the American League and the Marlin's were first in the National League. Both teams bringing their A game. This time, a man by the name of Edgar Retneria is up to bat for the Marlin's; it's the bottom of the eleventh and the score is tied. Retneria hits the ball up the middle and realizes with that hit he has just won the World Series with a walk-off single. And that was the last time the Indians were ever in the World Series.

Flash forward almost 30 years and it's the summer of 2016 and the Indians are 80-58 and are proudly number one yet again in the American League Centrals. I am now 18 years old and nine years later I am still walking up to Jacobs Field with no longer intimidation in my mind but instead, I walk with courage. Over the years, my love for baseball grew and I am proud to say being a fan of The Cleveland Indians is truly an honor. I grew up in this stadium, its seen me laugh, cry, every emotion possible while watching a baseball game. I've been so lucky to know that this team, this game, this place is something special and not only just to me but the other thousands of fans who share the same thoughts and emotions as I do. Go Tribe!

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
