Your weekly trip to Walmart (or Kroger, Publix, etc.), the closest grocery store to you, is where you get most of your necessities, especially your food. But instead of that weekly trip, you might have a weekly delivery. You might even have a daily or hourly delivery.
But why? For some reason, big grocery giants have decided to go into an all-out war against each other, and when one company makes an advancement, other companies have to follow suit. Ever since Amazon bought into the grocery game, grocery stores have felt threatened by the massive company and the detrimental effects Amazon can have on their sales and revenue.
Amazon bought Whole Foods last year and also partnered with Sprouts to start a new grocery delivery service, and their new platform, Prime Now, means you can get food delivered in just a couple of hours. And that's not even factoring their new brick-and-mortar grocery stores, which emphasizes walk-in/out shopping and a focus on healthy/organic/non-GMO food. Basically, in the short time, Amazon has dealt with groceries, they have already revolutionized the industry. And that puts all the old grocery stores in hot water.
So now, to protect their companies, stores like Walmart, Kroger, and Publix have entered the grocery delivery system, as sales and revenue for their brick-and-mortar stores begin to fall, just like their stock prices. And Kroger has taken it a step further, establishing a grocery delivery service in China through the Chinese retailer Alibaba's delivery platform Tmall.
To respond, Walmart has essentially done the same, but with an Alibaba competitor, to be able to deliver in China. So we'll have to just wait and see what's next.
