The Truth About Christmas

As the Grinch once said, “Maybe Christmas he thought doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.”

The Truth About Christmas
Chelsea Whaley

How many times this Christmas season have you found yourself worrying about how many presents you still have left to buy, how the time is running out, and the preparations you still to need to make for gatherings of friends and family? With Christmas right around the corner, I have once again noticed the usual chaotic scene that comes with it. Everyone feels the pressure to buy the perfect gifts for family and friends, but when did Christmas become such a hassle? People put more thought into decorating their homes, buying presents, and preparing for Santa to come than they do remembering the true reason for the season. Christmas is not meant to be an event centered on who gave the better gift or who has the best-decorated house. Christmas is the time to spend with loved ones, reminisce on the past year, and look forward to what is coming. To slow down and think about ways we can be grateful, help others, and share love. Our society today is dominated by materialism and consumerism, and it’s time that we change that.

When walking into any store around Christmas, you are bound to see many people frantically searching the aisles for that perfect gift. What seems to be forgotten is that we have already received the ultimate gift. On Christmas day many, many years ago this world was blessed with the birth of Jesus Christ. Luke 2:10 says “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a savior which is Christ the Lord.” On this day in the little town of Bethlehem, all of mankind received the greatest gift that could ever be given. This gift wasn’t bought in a store, it wasn’t on sale, and the price for it was already payed. The wealthy, the poor, the young, and the old all received the same gift. Absolutely no one was deserving of such grace, but God sent each and everyone one of us the gift of eternal life. The only thing we have to do is accept it, and God leaves it up to us whether we want to receive it or not. What gift will you find that will ever be better than that? A toy, new shoes, or that thing you thought you couldn’t live without will never compare to God’s gift. We should encourage others to see Christmas in a new light this year. Christmas is about love, peace, and goodwill not about what lies under the tree.

This Christmas, instead of waiting anxiously to open our gifts, we should think of ways we can make a difference in someone’s life. Be there for that family in need, pray for healing for those who are sick, and most importantly share the news of the gift that everyone can receive. I believe that Christmas is a time when miracles can happen, just like the one that was born in a manger to the Virgin Mary. On December 25

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
