Grey's Anatomy at this point in life has claimed its throne as the longest-running medical drama on television. The show is pretty polarizing: you either hate Grey's Anatomy or you love Grey's Anatomy. With a mighty length of sixteen seasons to choose from, Grey's Anatomy is an easy binge if you're up for the task.
Wrapping up its sixteenth season short due to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), the season finale left a lot of questions. Granted, that doesn't stray away from any typical season finale but this one just hit a little bit different. No, no one dies in this finale but the emotions still hit you right there.
On a happier note, Amelia and Link finally had their baby. The entire course of the season was filled with paternity issues and the major question of who really the father of Amelia's baby is: Owen or Link. After a break-up and time apart, Amelia and Link get back together and she revealed that Link was the father of her child. Amelia goes into labor during work and Link is quick to be there for her until he gets dragged away into surgery.
Rather than leaving Amelia to be alone, Dr. Bailey stays with her during the labor and supports her the same way George did when she gave birth to Tuck so many seasons ago. Unlike many other births in Grey's Anatomy, Amelia's was drama-free and gives birth to a baby boy. We are left at the end of the episode wondering what she names the child but many fans are hoping that she gives ode to her late brother, Derek.
On a much sadder note, the Teddy-Tom-Owen love triangle reaches new boundaries as Teddy accidentally sends Owen a voicemail of her and Tom getting intimate. I personally have never been much of an Owen fan during his run on the show and I do believe that Tom is better suited for her, this is an awful and gut-wrenching way to find out that you are getting cheated on. There was just something about the way that Owen sat there teary-eyed by himself listening to the voicemail again that broke my heart a little bit. He postpones the wedding they were having that same night and Teddy is left with the fact that Owen must have found out.
Richard's story seemed to initially have a good end to it: they figured out that Richard, in fact, did not have Alzheimer's and they were able to take the poisonous cobalt outside of his body. Catherine takes a stand firmly as his wife and she orders everyone in her typical stern voice to figure out what is wrong with him and I figured that maybe this is what they needed to get back on track. However, once Richard wakes up, he confronts Catherine and kicks him out of his hospital room.
Richard and Catherine's relationship is one that I've been rooting for so many seasons. I've always liked Catherine because she has always been a strong female lead but did so many wrong things in handling her argument with Richard. Yes, buying the hospital was mean and petty but she really should have just apologized. In the prior episode when Richard hallucinated that Catherine apologized, my heart dropped realizing that it was all in his head. I love Richard and Catherine, but it looks like this is something that they just might not recover from.
We can thank DeLuca for coming up with the diagnosis that saved Richard's life but, in my book,, it really doesn't excuse his behavior. DeLuca's father suffers from bipolar disorder and the latter half of season 16 has foreshadowed that DeLuca is following down the same path. Despite everyone advising Meredith to send him home and let him sleep, Meredith does not say anything despite the fact that she seems to be the only person who can calm him down. He throws the surgical instruments on the floor during Richard's surgery to get Bailey to listen to him and he his forgiven a little bit too quickly. The episode ends with Meredith comforting him when he cries, maybe indicating that he might finally be coming to terms with his condition.
It is up in the air how the next season is going to proceed; I am hopeful that the last four episodes of season 16 that were written would just roll over to season 17 so we can pick up right where we left off but in the meantime, I'll be binge-watching the show all over again until September.
