My Love For 'Grey's Anatomy' Has Flatlined, And I've Diagnosed Why

"Grey's Anatomy" is by far my most favorite show in the entire world. While I did skip the episodes surrounding Lexi Grey's death I have seen the show five times all the way through. It offers a really great story of human resiliency and how could you not fall in love with both McDreamy and McSteamy. I mean hello, they are both sooooooo beautiful it hurts. Despite the beautiful men, going into season 14, there are a few things I don't love about the show anymore.

I by no means think it needs to go off the air because that will be the day happiness dies, but, there are a couple of things I would change.

"As human beings, sometimes it’s better to stay in the dark, because in the dark there may be fear, but there is also hope." — Meredith Grey

1. It has become politicized:

There are episodes I really enjoy that make a larger comment on a social issue that is going on in our country. I really enjoyed the concept of a Physician-Assisted Suicide. If you know for a fact that painful illness is going to kill you, do you deserve the right to die peacefully with drugs you have a prescription for? To me, this is a great question that feels relevant to the show and still offered varying opinions from a few characters. Not that one political party is greater than the other because they both make great points, but, sometimes I feel like I am watching an advertisement for extremely left opinions.

There are certain issues that apply to people no matter their gender, sexuality, immigration status, or race, however, certain concepts on the show make way too blatant of a comment that makes you feel like you have to agree with the show's opinions. I signed up for this series because I like medical dramas and I liked the super complex relationships. I don't really condone the recent actions in "Grey's Anatomy" that tells me how they feel about breaking the law and our current immigration policies.

That particular issue didn't feel relevant to the show and just aimed to make a larger comment on our nation's policies. However, the episode concerning race and the police force felt like it belonged due to the medical side of the interaction.

2. I feel like no one will ever get a happy ending:

There are relationships that exist in this world that just work. They meet, they fall in love, they fight sometimes, and then everything is alright and the relationship moves to the next level. However, it seems that no one is allowed to be happy on this show.

I really believed in Meredith and Derek in the beginning. However, it seems that as time went on Meredith healed and Derek became a jackass. I really believe that even if they hadn’t killed him off their relationship would have come to an end. Alex never gets to have a fully stable relationship.

Yes, Jo is my favorite and she filled the Lexi sized hole in my heart, however, it seems like she’ll run if things ever get too hard. My biggest complaint is the way the April and Jackson situation went down. It feels like the quirkiness of April's personality wasn’t shiny anymore for the writers and they shoved her aside for Maggie. Maggie and Jackson should NOT be together.

3. They screwed April:

I hated her so much when she first invaded Seattle Grace, however, she has grown to be my most favorite character on the show. She has way more determination than the rest of the doctors and Shondaland chose to treat her as if she never mattered.

Shonda, we all noticed how you always kept her in the background. She, like most people, failed a few times. It’s normal. But she put herself back together each time and kept on moving no matter what her issues were. The new crisis of faith storyline is a good one and does offer depth to her character even though it's coming way too late considering that she will soon exit the show.

Sometimes things don’t feel fair and when you’re not ready to take responsibility for that, God will take that burden for you and then love you even after you realize you were wrong. This was an extremely important topic to cover for her character. She offers a depiction of this feeling that is really hard to capture and does well to show the process of one's walk with God. Sarah Drew is pure gold.

4. I don’t like the way some characters have exited the show:

Mark, Lexi, Henry, Callie, and now Arizona and April. The one I hated the most was the way Callie left the show. There was no big goodbye and she was just last seen in the doorway while Arizona allowed her to take Sofia to New York. I really grew to hate Callie by the end because she was honestly the common denominator in all of her problems, but, even Izzie got a better exit than she did.

I haven’t fully caught up with season 14 but, as of right now I don’t see a clear exit for either Arizona or April. Maybe Arizona will receive a grant for her research, but if they kill April off I will never forgive Shonda Rhimes.

5. I honestly don’t always love Meredith:

While she may have grown, it seems that she still does extremely childish things. The way everything just works out for her is kind of annoying and if the reason why I am losing some of the greatest characters on the show is because of her pay then I am a little pissed. It’s called budgeting people!

I don’t need her to find love again, but her possessiveness over Alex drives me insane and the way she treated Amelia after Derek's death is completely wrong. It's her personality. I just hate it.

6. I really miss Cristina!

All that being said, I still love this show so much and don't want it to go off the air any time soon.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
