Being from Long Island, although you may not realize it, there are many things us Long Islanders do differently than the people we will meet in college who are not from Long Island. I have had to explain the different things we do on Long Island, the different ways we speak, and the different words we use to all of my friends from other places.
Every time I return back to Long Island I am reminded of what I've missed while I was gone, and there are numerous things. Here are 10 signs that you grew up ON Long Island.
1. A bagel and deli ice coffee is the Monday morning cure.
Everything bagel with cream cheese please!
2. People ask you if you personally know the Long Island medium.
Although I've met her once, I do not personally know her.
3. It wasn't a good night out if you didn't end up at the diner.
T'was a good night with friends.
4. Ralph's opening in March means it is summer even though there still may be snow on the ground.
From water ice flavors to cream ice flavors, the possibilities are endless.
5.You went to more bar/bat mitzvahs than you can remember.
What are you doing Saturday night? I have a bat mitzvah.
6. You refer to New York City as "the city."
Only a forty minute train ride away from the greatest city in the world
7. You refer to going to the Hamptons as, going "out east."
Try and see if you can spot celebs walking in town: the Kardashians? J Lo? Billy Joel?
8. You have to explain to your friends that aren't from Long Island how amazing delis are.
Personally, my friends here in Florida think that the Publix supermarket has amazing sandwiches, but they've never been to a deli before.
9. You put your clothes in a draw, not a drawer.
Drawer, end of story.
10. And finally, you live ON Long Island, not IN Long Island.
ON Long Island, don't mess it up.
