Putnam Valley, NY is a small town nestled in between Westchester and Dutchess county and has a population of about 12,000. There is something about growing up in a small town that really shapes the people who live there. The townsfolk of Putnam Valley are their own breed but we all somehow fit together. If you grew up in Putnam Valley, most (if not all) of these facts will apply to you and your life.

1. You attended Putnam Valley Elementary, Middle and High School.

2. Or you may have gone to a different high school.

See, the top rule only applies if you graduated after the year of 2003. Otherwise, you attended Walter Panas High School, Lakeland High School or Peekskill High School because Putnam Valley High School wasn't built until the year 2000.

3. You're proud of the girls' field hockey team win in 2005 because it is the only state win this town has had in sports.

4. You remember when they built the new wing at the elementary school.

5. You also remember the back building at the elementary school.

6. You have spent at least one night in the town park for the summer concert series.

7. You have attended a baseball/softball game at one of the fields in the town park, or the Rotary field.

8. You know someone who has volunteered or currently does so for Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department or Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

9. You remember when they added the traffic light in front of the high school driveway which made the town have three traffic lights, which are all on the same road.

10. You have attended or worked at Putnam Valley Day Camp, Camp Combe YMCA or Camp Floradan.

11. You have swam, fished or ridden a boat in Lake Oscawana, Lake Peekskill or Roaring Brook.

12. You grew up knowing a Rush, Cobb, Stockinger, Tompkins, Mazza or Gallagher.

13. You had the same teachers as your siblings, cousins and sometimes even your parents.

14. You know the people who work at the post office, pharmacy and bank by first name.

15. You have grown up knowing true deli food, because that's all you have to eat.

16. Going out to the store meant literally leaving the town and county to get to one.

17. You have attended a BBQ at the Pavillion in the Town Park.

18. Most of your late nights were spent driving down Sunken Mine.

19. Town Day was the highlight of your summer until someone had the bright idea to switch it to the middle of September.

(You also know the Town Day fireworks are the best around, even if they do almost burn down the whole town).

20. You will always consider Putnam Valley your home.

The Valley may be one of the most boring places on the planet when it comes to there being no stores, malls, sidewalks or well just about anything, but no matter how much we say we hate it, it is our home. We will always bleed blue and white and always represent.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
