Green Living For CUA

Focus on off-campus living.

CUA doesn’t actually recycle as much as you probably thought. We get a decent amount of things recycled, but as of December 2015, 68 percent of all waste ended up in a landfill.

You may have wondered why display cases started popping up on top of the trash, composting, and recycling containers. It’s because we haven’t been able to get to our green goals.

Pro-tip: look at the display cases to see what can and cannot go in each bin.

This is something that everyone around campus can do. If enough people do it, hopefully, we can start getting more things to recycling plants and composting locations.

Off-Campus

Living off campus is wonderful. There is so much more freedom to make decisions and not be shackled to RA’s or meal plans. You can also get a dog!

So, if you want to help the environment, here are some ways to do it. Many will save money too.

  • Turn lights off when you leave a room.
  • When showering or brushing teeth, turn the water off until you need to rinse.
  • If you don’t have a dishwasher, keep two buckets of water in your sink: one with soapy water to wash, one with clean water to rinse. If you use biodegradable dish soap, use this water to water plants.
  • Walk or ride a bike to and from campus ( you won’t get as sweaty as you think, but bring a travel-sized deodorant with you just in case).
  • Instead of using plastic baggies for lunch or food, use reusable containers. You don’t even have to buy these. Save your plastic hummus, yogurt, and take-out containers, wash them, and reuse them.
  • Compost: you can do this yourself or use a service that’s $25 a month to do it for you.
  • Recycle.
  • Use the air-conditioning less: at night and early morning when it’s cool outside, open the windows and use a fan. When it’s warmer, close the windows and use the air if it’s too hot.
  • Use a reusable water bottle.
  • Go vegetarian or vegan.
  • Use metal cans from canned veggie as containers or items for DIY projects.
  • Use your backpack and/or reusable grocery bags for grocery shopping.
  • Use a reusable coffee filter instead of a paper one or disposable k-cups.
  • Buy biodegradable cleaning products (Yes, Organic Market has a great selection).
  • Keep a bucket in your bathroom to collect the cold water from the shower before it warms up. Use this to water plants or wash dishes.

Christmas Tree
History.com

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
