Green Is The New Red And Blue

How Dr. Jill Stein has taken the 2016 election by storm.

The election is almost here. Yard signs are standing proudly at the curbs of political houses, people are getting agitated and worrisome, and Barack Obama dropped the mic at his last White House correspondents Dinner.

Yes, November is almost here. What comes with it are four new candidates, and each have the potential to be the next face of the United States of America.

Our options? Well, we have the Republican nominee, Donald J. Trump, and we all know what he’s about. There’s the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, whose lack of trustworthiness outweighs her intelligence and experience in most voters' eyes. Another is the Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson, who is all for guns and weed and who actually ran as a Republican candidate back in the 2012 election, though he doesn’t always say the brightest things.

Then there’s Jill Stein of the Green Party.

For those of us millennials who were major #Berners back when Bernie Sanders was still in the running, this just may be the candidate for you. Dr. Jill Stein is Bernie Sanders with heels, and while she may only have 2.3% of the vote, according to USA Today, she is still a candidate worth taking a look at and maybe even casting your own ballot for on November 8th.

Jill Stein, who was the Green Party nominee back in the 2012 election, has only one thing in mind: Power to the People. Directly from her campaign website, she states that “My Power to the People Plan creates deep system change, moving from the greed and exploitation of corporate capitalism to a human-centered economy that puts people, planet and peace over profit. It offers direct answers to the economic, social, and ecological crises brought on by both corporate political parties. And it empowers the American people to fix our broken political system and make real the promise of democracy.”

She goes on to say that “This plan will end unemployment and poverty; avert climate catastrophe; build a sustainable, just economy; and recognize the dignity and human rights of everyone in our society and our world. The power to create this new world is not in our hopes, it’s not in our dreams - it’s in our hands.”

Her stances on the issues and her plans for this country almost directly mirror Sanders', such as her stance on the environment. “Create millions of jobs by transitioning to 100% clean renewable energy by 2030, and investing in public transit, sustainable agriculture, and conservation.” She also vows to “end police brutality and mass incarceration,” set up a $15/hour minimum wage plan, and the big kicker that is every college student's favorite words: Abolish student debt, claiming that “we did it for the crooks on Wall Street, why can’t we do it for these young people that are victims of these crooks?”

For a physician who has never before held an elected office, Stein has quite a force behind her. The Green Party, which was founded in 1984, has fought for, and won, the opportunity to be on the national ballot since 1996. Back when Stein was their nominee in 2012, she received the most votes for a woman in a presidential election in U.S. history at the time.

The Green Party stands for four “pillars”: Peace, Ecology, Social Justice, and Democracy. According to the Green Party’s official website, “In May 1984, when progressive politics in the United States was fighting for survival, a Green Movement Committee was founded with the goal of “the formation of a Green political organization in the USA.” The committee declared, “To be effective, a Green political organization must originate from a broad base of support, from natural allies concerned with ecological politics and social justice, peace and nonviolence, local and regional self-management and grassroots democracy.” That summer, the founding meeting of U.S. Greens took place in St. Paul, Minnesota.”

Ever since, the Green Party, and Jill Stein herself, have fought to be a regular part of the presidential debates. While they haven’t succeeded just yet, their voices haven’t been completely silenced. Over 100 elected officials in the United States are members of the Green Party, and the party’s goal is to keep that number growing.

While it would be an incredible milestone for Hillary Clinton to win the election and become the first woman president, some people, especially millennials, just aren’t buying into it. Though Sanders officially endorsed her back on July 12th, many of his loyal supporters are still having trouble checking blue.

That’s where Green comes in.

Stein is a powerhouse and, whether you agree with some of her stances or not, she is someone who deserves to be respected and has fought a hard battle in this campaign. If millennials, Berners, or anybody out there wants to exercise their freedom to vote but doesn’t know if they can choose the “lesser of two evils,” Stein says that you don’t have to. “Stand up for the greater good,” she says. “Vote your hopes, not your fears...it’s in our hands.”

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
