When I think of the month of September I do not really get excited or happy about it, because September means school is in full swing. I have never been a fan of school no matter what grade I am in or what we are learning. I just have never enjoyed it so the month of September is not on my list of favorites either. However, what makes September bearable in my eyes is the start of NFL football. More in particular, the start of a new football season for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers keep me coming back every September to watch more incredible football. I am not sure I would come back each September to watch football if the Packers did not exist. I have learned football and Green Bay Packers football are two very different things and I prefer to watch Packers football. The Packers are like no other football team and that is why I love them. The Packers represent real, true, American football just about perfectly.
I say this because the Packers are the ONLY non-profit, community-owned major league sports team that is based in America. In other words not one person or family owns the Packers. Instead of one really old, rich man owning an entire football team, the Packers have thousands of share holders. The Packers do not have their own professional cheerleaders. Instead of having women dance around half naked on the side of the field, the Packers have cheerleaders from local college cheerleading squads. They do not wear skimpy outfits (even if they weren't young girls they would freeze in the Wisconsin weather) and do not go to away games because they most likely have school the next day. This makes the team feel a little more personable and family-oriented.
The Packers have also been around since the very beginning of professional football teams. The Packers are the third-oldest franchise in the NFL. Not to mention the fact that they won the first Super Bowl ever to be played in the NFL and came back a year later to win Super Bowl II. The Packers have won 13 league championships, the most in NFL history and overall 4 Super Bowls. It is not surprising that the name of the trophy the team wins at the Super Bowl is named after the Packer's head coach who led them to their first two victories, Vince Lombardi.
The Packers also never fail to put on a good show for the fans. Few things compare to the rivalry the Packers have with the Chicago Bears. Packers vs. Bears games are always exciting to watch. You can feel the tension through your t.v. screen that is radiating on the field between the two teams. Even if the Packers aren't playing the Bears the game is still going to be one to watch. The Packers are known for having amazing comebacks and crazy (almost impossible) things happen to them. If you don't believe me Youtube the Hail Mary from last years game against Detroit, and if you still don't believe me Youtube the SECOND Hail Mary also from last years game against Arizona.
Possibly the best thing about the Packers is the fans. The Packers have an extremely loyal fan base. Every single game played at Lambeau Field since 1960 has been sold out. No matter what the Packers performance was on the field the fans seem to always come back and stay faithful to the green and gold. Despite having by far the smallest local t.v. market, the Packers consistently rank as one of the most popular in the NFL. Packers fans, also known as cheeseheads, create one of the longest season ticket waiting lists in professional sports. The average wait to become a season ticket holder is a little over 30 years, so if you are interested in getting season tickets you may want to sign up today.
The Green Bay Packers are so much more than a football team to its fans. The Packers are family. A really loud, cheese loving, Chicago Bear hating family, that is loyal to their team no matter what the score is at the end of the game.
GO PACK GO!!!
